SALISBURY, MD – The York College softball squad remained
hot as they picked up a pair of wins on Friday afternoon in the
opening round of the 2009 Salisbury University Tournament. The
Spartans, who are ranked 21st in the nation, defeated #25 Moravian
5-4 and then bested Virginia Wesleyan 11-0 in five innings. The
Spartans are now 13-3 with the two wins.
In the opener, the Spartans jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a
Kelly Smith (Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti)
RBI single. The Green and White pushed the lead to 3-0 with a pair
of runs in the top of the fourth. Julie Norris (Frederick,
Md./Frederick) opened the fourth with home run to left.
Sam Koehl (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson)
added an RBI single in the inning to account for the scoring.
The Greyhounds got on the board in the bottom of the fourth as
they struck for a pair of runs, cutting the Spartan lead to 3-2.
York responded with two runs in the sixth courtesy of a Moravian
throwing error, allowing the Spartans to score the decisive runs.
Moravian scored a single run in the bottom of the sixth and then
trimmed York's lead to 5-4 with a single run in the bottom of
the seventh. Koehl came on in relief of Spartan starter
Brittany Therres (Hughesville, Md./Thomas Stone)
and got the final out for her first save of the year.
Smith and Norris led the Spartan offense as they each banged out
two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Koehl had the other Spartan RBI
as she was 1-for-4 in the game.
Stephanie Falzarano and Jenna Carmon each had two hits to pace
the Greyhounds. Deanna Mangieri was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI for
Moravian.
Therres earned the win as she tossed 6.2 innings, allowing four
runs, three earned, on nine hits with three strikeouts and no
walks. She improves to 7-1 with the win. Koehl threw to one batter
to notch the save.
Elizabeth Python started and went just two thirds of an inning
before Maria DeBonis replaced her. DeBonis suffered the loss a she
allowed five runs, two earned, on seven hits with six walks and
three strikeouts. She falls to 4-4 with the loss.
In the victory over Virginia Wesleyan, the Spartans broke out
the long ball as they banged out four bombs in the game.
The Spartans began the bottom of the first with a solo home run
from Smith as the sophomore preseason All-American ripped her first
tater of the year. After a walk and a line out, Heather
Bormann (Brick, N.J./Brick) hit York's second home
run, a two run shot that put York up 3-0.
The Spartan floodgates opened in the third as the Green and White
exploded for six runs in the frame. Kristen Gray
(Mickleton, N.J./Kingsway Regional) and Koehl homered in
the inning. Gray's shot was a solo bomb to lead off the
inning while Koehl's was a three run shot.
That would be more than enough for Koehl as she twirled a
three-hit shutout. The junior struck out six and walked two as she
raised her record to 8-1. Alley Eates absorbed the loss as she
allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits with two walks and a
strikeout in two innings.
Koehl led the 13-hit Spartan attack with a 2-for-4 performance.
She drove in five while she also had her third home run of the
year. Smith was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI out of
the lead off spot. Bormann went 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs
scored while Gray was the fourth Spartan with multiple hits as she
went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Katie Dunstan, Shannon Renigar, and Brittany Daniels each had a
single for the Marlins.
York will return to action on Saturday as they face Lynchburg at
9:00 am followed by an 11:00 am game against #13 Christopher
Newport in the second day of the tournament.
