STEVENSON, MD – The York College
women's lacrosse team suffered their second loss of the year
Wednesday, falling to Capital Athletic Conference foe Stevenson
University, 17-9. The Spartans, who have lost both of their games
on the road, now stand at 0-2 (0-1 CAC) while the Mustangs improve
to 2-0 (2-0 CAC).
The hosts came out firing as they
hung three goals on the Spartans within the contest's first
5:20. Kristyna Hnizda, Megan Weiss, and Lisa Baker all notched
tallies while Lauren Zegowitz recorded an assist on Hnizda's
opening goal.
York's Megan Foy (Toms
River, N.J./Toms River North) put her squad on the board
with a score at the 24:30 mark of the first frame. After winning
the draw control following Baker's score, the Spartan captain
raced down the field and abruptly slotted home her second goal of
the year.
Stevenson quickly answered
Foy's score with two of their own, courtesy of Zegowitz.
Taking just 47 seconds off the clock following Foy's tally,
Zegowitz finished an unassisted attempt. Nearly five minutes later
Zegowitz finished again, this time on a free-position shot.
Down 5-1, Foy and sophomore
Molly Kerrigan (Bel Air, Md./Institute of Notre
Dame) brought the Spartans back to within two at the 13:27
mark of the first. Foy's third and Kerrigan's first of
the year cut the Mustang lead to 5-3.
Nearly four minutes later, Stevenson
went on a brief 2-0 run to restore their four-goal margin at 7-3.
Kristin Gancarz and Mandi Carr each notched their first of the game
at the 9:38 and 8:37 marks respectively. Once again Zegowitz was
involved as she assisted on Gancarz's goal.
Junior defender Kelly Vrana (West
Islip, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) added a tally to the
Spartans' side of the board with 7:01 left, but her goal was
answered by Stevenson's Baker two-and-a-half minutes
later.
Senior midfielder Megan Bell
(Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) brought the York side
to within three once again at 8-5 with only 1:27 remaining in the
frame. Stevenson then quickly dashed any momentum Bell's goal
had given the Spartans with a tally just 19 seconds later. Zegowitz
was once again the culprit as she tallied her fifth point of the
half on an unassisted goal.
The Mustangs opened the second frame
with a 5-0 run to go up by a 14-5 margin. Beginning with a Baker
goal at the 24:13 mark, the hosts posted the spurt over an 11:20
period. Within that time, Baker added another score, Weiss scored
on two occasions, and Zegowitz tallied for the fourth time.
York's Vrana added two more
goals for the Green and White, while Kerrigan and Bell each notched
their second of the game with less than ten minutes to go in the
contest.
Stevenson would tack on three more after their 5-0 run, including
two from Baker to secure the 17-9 victory.
The Mustangs held a 38-19 advantage
in shots for the game while they also bested the Spartans 20-18 in
ground balls. Stevenson owned a 17-11 lead in draw controls but the
York side did fair much better in the second frame, nabbing six to
the Mustang's seven.
Baker led the scoring with six goals
on the day while she also tallied an assist. Zegowitz added four
goals and a pair of helpers while she also won three draw controls
and collected two ground balls. Weiss posted three goals and Carr
two, as she also picked up four draw controls and three ground
balls. Jenny Schroeder takes the win the Mustang cage as she made
six saves.
Vrana led the Spartans with a trio
of goals while adding two draw controls and two ground balls from
her defensive position. Three Spartans, Bell, Foy, and Kerrigan,
each notched two goals in the contest. Bell also collected six draw
controls and six ground balls to lead the Green and White. Senior
goalkeeper Anne Feustle (Baltimore,
Md./Catonsville) is saddled with the loss in York's
net as she foiled ten Mustang attempts.
York will remain in conference play
for the next contest, traveling to #3 Salisbury University this
Saturday. The CAC tilt is slated for noon.
