ELIZABETHTOWN, PA – The York College
women's lacrosse team suffered an 18-3 loss at the hands of
host Elizabethtown College Saturday afternoon in the
Spartans' 2009 season-opener. The Green and White begin the
year in the loss column while the Blue Jays start 1-0.
The hosts jumped out front early,
recording the game's first three goals. Katie Caprinolo and
Stephanie Kreis each tallied unassisted scores before Katie Foley
notched Elizabethtown's third on a Kelsea Kozak helper.
Facing a 3-0 deficit by the first
half's 25:04 mark, junior captain Megan Bell
(Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) responded with
York's first goal of the season. Bell tallied her first of
the year on a free position shot with 23:41 remaining in the first
stanza.
The Blue Jays' quickly
answered as Megan Byrnes notched her first of the year off of an
Anna Ford assist less than 90 seconds after Bell's score.
Elizabethtown would add three more to the board before the
Spartans' could post their second.
Fellow junior captain Megan
Foy (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) recorded the Green
and White's second tally on a brilliant individual effort in
front of the Blue Jay cage. Foy cradled the ball at the top of the
offense before using her outstanding quickness to slip past her
first defender. The junior avoided the Blue Jays' next line
of defense with a gorgeous spin move that left her wide open in
front of the goal. With only Elizabethtown's goalkeeper left
to beat, Foy found the back of the net and cut the Blue Jay lead to
7-2.
The five-goal difference did not
last long however, as the Blue Jays quickly mounted a substantial
lead. Following an Elizabethtown yellow card and subsequent
penalty, Caprinolo posted a man-down goal at the 9:18 mark of the
first. Caprinolo's goal sparked a 10-0 run for the hosts that
spilled over well into the second frame.
The Spartans would only notch one
more score on the afternoon as sophomore defender Kelly
Vrana (West Islip, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) scored on a
free position shot with 11:33 to play in the second.
Anna Ford capped off the Blue Jay scoring
with 6:30 remaining to secure the 18-3 victory.
Ford proved to be the day's high scorer as she hit the back
of the Spartan net six times. She also posted an assist, two ground
balls, two turnovers, and a draw control. Foley added a trio of
tallies for the Blue Jays, collecting a pair of ground balls. Three
more Blue Jays each scored twice. Goalkeeper Jenn Hawkins picks up
the win in the cage as she registered five saves in her 30 minutes
of work. Becca Watkins relieved Hawkins for the second frame and
recorded four saves.
In addition to her goal, Bell added six
draw controls and two ground balls to the Spartan stat sheet. Foy
and Vrana each picked up a pair of ground balls. Senior goalkeeper
Anne Feustle (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) made 10
saves throughout her 60 minutes of action.
The Green and White return to action
on Wednesday, February 25, with a trip down to Stevenson
University. York faces the Mustangs in their first Capital Athletic
Conference contest at 3:00 pm.
