CHAMBERSBURG, PA - The York College field hockey
team suffered a shocking loss as they fell to Wilson College 3-2 in
non-conference action on Thursday afternoon in Chambersburg, PA.
The Phoenix, which entered the match with just one win, improved to
2-9 overall while the Spartans, who had won six of their last
seven, fall to 8-6 for the campaign.
The Spartans started out strong with a
Katie Dawkins (Easton, Pa./Easton) goal off a
Megan Spangler (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon
County) assist 16:36 into the game. The tally was
Dawkins' team-leading 13th goal of the year.
The Phoenix entered the game having scored
just six goals in their previous ten games but that would not
matter as the Spartan lead would prove to be short lived.
Wilson's Tara Fields tallied a goal off a Melissa Ellerman
feed on a penalty corner with 13:56 remaining in the first half,
tying the game at one. The Phoenix took the lead just over three
minutes later as Liesel Troshak notched an unassisted goal.
Wilson continued its offensive assault on the
Spartans as Jami DeVanie put home what would prove to be the
winning goal with 2:21 prior to the intermission.
The Spartans trimmed their deficit by one as
Spangler fed Allison Roush (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim
Township) off a penalty corner with just 12 seconds
remaining in the opening half. The goal was Roush's seventh
of the year and gave York momentum heading to the intermission.
The first half shots were close with York
holding a 7-4 edge while York recorded 11 penalty corners to three
for the Phoenix.
The second half featured an relentless Spartan
attack on Wilson's goal. Unfortunately for York, Wilson
netminder Nikol Grafneeerova was up to the task as she notched four
second half saves to preserve the win. York finished the second
half with 13 shots and 11 corners but zero goals as they dropped
just their second road game of the year.
For the game, York outshot the hosts 20-7
while also holding a whopping 22-4 edge in penalty corners.
Grafnetterova tallied seven saves in the win
while senior netminder Claire Rekitzke (Seaford,
Del./Seaford Senior) was credited with just one save in
her 70 minutes in goal.
The Spartans will look to get back on the
winning side of the ledger on Tuesday, October 13 when they host
Elizabethtown College in a non-conference match in York. Game time
is set for 4:30 pm.
