YORK, PA - The York College baseball team posted a solid 10-4
non-conference win over Moravian Tuesday evening at York's Jacquet
Field. With the win the Spartans improve to 8-19 in 2008 while the
Greyhounds fall to 11-13.
York opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with a pair
of runs. A Ryan Craig (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky
Point) single and subsequent steal allowed Ryan
Poff (York,
Pa./Spring Grove) to knock in the
Spartan's second baseman with a single to right field. Poff scored
later in the inning on a Steve Pokopec
(York,
Pa./Northeastern) single to boost
the early green and white advantage to 2-0 at the end of one
inning.
The Spartans then exploded in the bottom of the second, plating
five more runs off Moravian starting pitcher Richard Schultz.
Rob Klinck (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional)
led-off the Spartans' half of the second with a walk, then scooted
around to third on a Joe Doyle
(Stewartstown,
Pa./Red Lion) double to
right-center. Klinck then came home on a wild pitch, while Doyle
moved to third. First baseman Anthony Anzalone (Rocky
Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) then plated Doyle with a ground
out to first.
Now up 4-0 and only one out, the Spartans would score three more
times in the inning. Craig reached on a throwing error by Greyhound
third baseman Jake Schweitzer and then advanced to second on Poff's
single to left field, the junior's second hit of the day.
Dennis Maxim (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St.
Anthony's) then boomed his seventh double of the year to
left center allowing Craig to score and Poff to move to third.
Senior catcher Mike Santoro (Manalapan,
N.J./Manalapan) would drive home the final two runs of the
inning with a roped double to left. After two full innings the
Spartans found themselves up 7-0.
The Greyhounds answered in the top of the third with one run,
and then cashed in a trio of scores in the top of the fifth. Brett
Stout and Jason Huber opened the fifth with a pair of singles.
David Lengyel then drew a walk to load the bases. Joseph Durso
grounded out to first to plate Moravian's second run of the game
before Jacob Millen's one-out single drove in two more runs. The
Greyhounds had now dwindled the Spartans' early advantage to only
three at 7-4. But that would be the last time the green and white
allowed a run.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Spartans added a pair of
insurance runs. With one out, Craig slipped a single down the third
base line past the out stretched glove of Schweitzer. After Poff
popped out, Craig swiped second just before Maxim drew a
walk. With two on and two out, Santoro knocked a single to
left to score Craig and move Maxim over to third. Santoro then took
second base for his second steal of the year. Pokopec would drive
in Maxim on a ground ball in the hole that new Moravian third
baseman Jon Baltz gloved by ranging to his left but was unable to
complete the throw. Pokopec was awarded with a hit and a run batted
in and the Spartans recorded their ninth run of the day.
The scoring closed out in the bottom of the seventh as York
would tack on one more run. The Spartans would tally this score
without one base hit in the inning. After Doyle reached on an
error, the freshman stole second and moved to third on an Anzalone
sacrifice fly. Craig then walked and Poff reached on a throwing
error by the Greyhound shortstop, resulting in Doyle's score and
the final count of 10-4.
Left-hander Jake Hughes
(Schwenksville,
Pa./Souderton) picks up the win
for the Spartans as he improves to 2-2 on the year. Chris
Frankenfield (Blue Bell,
PA/Wissahickon) threw two innings
in relief while Taylor Gunder (Red Lion, Pa./Red
Lion) and Pokopec each threw a pair of scoreless innings.
Schultz is charged with the loss for the Greyhounds and falls to
0-1. Andrew DelRossi came in for Schultz and pitched 1 2/3 innings
before he was relieved by Philip Spence who went 3 1/3 innings.
Brandon Palmisano finished out the game on the mound for Moravian
going 1 2/3.
For the game, the Spartans collected 12 hits including three
doubles. Santoro led the way in the R.B.I. department as the senior
drove in three and went 2-for-4 for the day. Pokopec recorded two
hits in five at-bats and collected two R.B.I.'s. Maxim's 2-for-3
performance included two walks, two runs scored, and one run batted
in. Craig and Poff each touched the plate twice while Craig had a
pair of stolen bases and Poff registered one R.B.I.
The Greyhounds accumulated ten hits but cost themselves with
four errors. Millen recorded a pair of hits in four at-bats and
knocked in three runs while Durso went 2-for-4 from the dish and
recorded one R.B.I. Huber had one hit and scored a run.
The Spartans return to the diamond on Wednesday, April 9, as
they travel to Villa Julie for a Capital Athletic Conference tilt.
The first pitch is slated for 4:00 pm.
