YORK, PA-The York College women's lacrosse team fell
behind early in the game but battled back before falling to #17
Mary Washington in a Capital Athletic Conference contest on a
chilly Saturday afternoon in York. The Eagles improve to 6-3 with
the win while they are also 4-0 in the CAC. The Spartans fall to
5-4 overall as their three game win streak was snapped. York is now
2-3 in the CAC.
The Eagles flew out of the gate as they scored the first seven
goals of the game. Sarah Finney scored three of the first seven
goals while Julia Milner added two goals of her own. Caitlin
Erickson added a goal and a pair of assists in the spurt.
York got a pair of goals back before the half as Jaclyn
VanLuit (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) got York on the
board with 7:12 left in the half with an unassisted goal. Senior
Alison Napolitano (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Area
Christian) scored York's other first half goal as
she notched an unassisted tally with 5:39 remaining before the
half.
The Eagles offense continued their onslaught with a five goal
spurt to start the second half as the lead ballooned to 12-2. York
received a Rachel Papsan (Baltimore, Md./North
County) goal to stop the Eagle scoring barrage. Brittany
Butler pushed the lead back to 13-3 on a free position goal but
York answered with three goals in a 31 second span to trim the UMW
lead to 13-6.
After the teams traded a pair of goals to make the score 15-8,
VanLuit scored two goals in 20 seconds and Papsan added another
tally 1:21 later, cutting the Eagle lead to 15-11. Mary Washington
added an Erickson goal with 2:09 left to close out the scoring.
Erickson had a big day for the Eagles as she had five goals and
five assists for 10 points. Butler and Finney each added four
points on three goals and one assist while Emily Talbot added two
goals and two assists for four points. Milner had a trio of tallies
for UMW.
Offensively for York, VanLuit notched four goals to pace the
green and white. Bell contributed three points on two goals and one
assist while Papsan and Napolitano each had two goals. Freshman
Molly Kerrigan (Bel Air, Md./Institute of Notre
Dame) scored one goal and assisted on one other for a pair
of points.
Meredith Deitrick earned the win in net for Mary Washington.
Deitrick played the first 35:40 of the game before being subbed for
as the Eagles were up 11-2. Helena Polites relieved Deitrick and
the Spartans tallied eight goals on ten shots in 19:19, forcing
the Eagles to bring Deitrick back into the game where she
played the final 5:01, preserving the win. Deitrick finished the
game with nine saves and three goals allowed in 40:41 of work.
Polites allowed eight goals and made one save in her stint.
Goalkeeper Anne Feustle (Baltimore,
Md./Catonsville) went the distance in net and made ten
saves as she allowed the 16 Eagle goals.
Mary Washington finished the game with a 35-29 edge in shots
while they held a big 40-24 edge in ground balls. The Spartans
committed 34 turnovers of which 16 were caused by UMW. The Eagles
made 26 miscues for the game.
York returns to action on Wednesday when they host Villa Julie
in a CAC contest. Game time is set for 3:30 pm in York.
