YORK, PA-The York College women's
lacrosse team dropped another tough contest as the Catholic
Cardinals posted a 13-9 Capital Athletic Conference road victory in
York on Monday. The Cardinals improve to 8-3 overall and 3-2 in the
CAC while the Spartans fall to 3-6 for the campaign including 2-4
in the conference.
The Cardinals scored the first goal of the game
only to have the Spartans tally the next two goals to take the 2-1
lead. Catholic responded by scoring the next five goals to take the
6-2 lead with 3:53 remaining in the half. York responded by scoring
three goals in 27 seconds late in the half to cut the lead to 6-5
with 1:17 remaining in the stanza. Marcy Cuneo stopped the Spartan
spurt with a goal of her own just 1:03 prior to the break as the
Cardinals took the 7-5 lead to the intermission.
Catholic pushed their lead to 9-5 with the first
two goals of the second half. York got free position goals from
Jaclyn Girsh (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) and Kaitlin Davis (Annapolis,
MD/St. Mary's), drawing the Spartans to within two at 9-7 with
11:14 remaining in regulation. Catholic tallied the next two goals,
pushing their lead back to four at 11-7. Brianna Yapps (Joppa,
MD/Fallston) scored with 4:35 left but Catholic answered with a
Jackie Lodge goal with 3:32 remaining, pushing the Cardinal lead to
12-8. Megan Bell (Westminster, MD/Francis Scott Key) scored with
3:11 left but the Cardinals closed out the scoring with a Kate
Robinson goal at the horn.
The Cardinals were led by Cuneo as she tallied
four points on two goals and two assists. Robinson added three
goals, four draw controls, and two ground balls. Courtney Murray
added three points on two goals and an assist with two draw
controls.
The Spartans were paced by Davis and Alison
Napolitano (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis Area Christian) as they each
had three points. Davis had two goals and an assist while
Napolitano had one goal and two assists. Girsh added two ground
balls and one draw control. Bell was again outstanding for York as
she had a goal, an assist, six ground balls, and one draw
control.
Melissa Brashear finished the game with nine
saves in the win while York goalie Anne Fuestle (Baltimore,
MD/Catonsville) registered nine saves in the loss.
The Cardinals had a 27-24 edge in total shots
while they also held a slight 25-23 advantage in ground balls. The
Spartans committed 22 turnovers while Catholic had 25 miscues in
the game. The Spartans were better with their free position
chances, converting 3-of-5 while Catholic was 0-for-2. The
Cardinals won 13 of the game's 23 draw controls.
York continues to battle the top teams in the
Capital Athletic Conference close as they have been very much in
the game in three of their four league losses. Their only lopsided
loss came in the season-opener at #3 Salisbury.
The Spartans step out of conference on Thursday
as they host Chestnut Hill in a non-conference contest. Game time
from Kinsley Field is set for 4:00 pm.
