Spartans Split with Salisbury in CAC Showdown

    YORK, PA-The York College softball team split their Capital Athletic Conference twinbill with Salisbury on Saturday afternoon in York. The Sea Gulls captured game one 7-4 before the Spartans salvaged a split with a dramatic 3-2 win in the night cap. The Spartans are now 15-15 overall and 5-3 in the CAC. They have secured the second seed in next weekend's CAC Tournament while Salisbury will be the tournament's top seed. The Sea Gulls are now 23-7 overall and 7-1 in the conference.  
    In game one, the Sea Gulls took the early 1-0 lead in the first. They added to the lead in the fourth with a pair of runs. The green and white tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a three-run double from freshman Lauren Brenneman (York, PA/Central York). The Spartan uprising was aided by a pair of Salisbury errors in the inning.
    The Sea Gulls responded in the top of the fifth as Stacey Malarkey jacked a two-run homer. It was Malarkey's second home run of the day as she opened the scoring with a solo shot in the first. York cut into the lead with a Brenneman RBI single in the sixth but Salisbury added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh.    
    Stacy Davis earned the win as she tossed seven innings, allowing four unearned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and two walks. She improves to 9-2 with the win. Sophomore Nicole Kerfoot (Owings, MD/Northern) took the loss as she allowed seven runs on 12 hits with four strikeouts in seven innings. She falls to 5-5 with the loss.
    Malarkey was the star for the Gulls as she was 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Nichole Fuqua added three hits, two runs scored and an RBI. Kelley Waskewicz added two hits and a run scored.
    Brenneman had her best game as a Spartan as she was 4-for-4 with four RBI. Sophomore Ali Merrifield (Dallastown, PA/Dallastown) added two hits to the Spartan offensive attack.
    In game two, it was the Spartans getting on the board first as Sam Lawrence (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) walked, stole second, stole third and scored on a Brenneman bunt single.
    Salisbury tied the game in the top of the second and the score would remain tied until the Sea Gulls got a Tee Dronenburg sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth to take the 2-1 lead.
    York ted the game in the fifth on an Afton Brugger (Westfield, PA/Cowanesque Valley) single and then took the lead when Megan Lahner (Finksburg, MD/Westminster) scored on a Merrifield RBI fielder's choice.
    The Sea Gulls had a chance to tie the game in the seventh. The inning began with a critical Spartan error. After a sacrifice moved the runner over to second, Meghan Murphy grounded out for the second out of the inning. Malarkey was hit by a Lahner pitch to put runners at first and second with two outs. Lahner then got Fuqua to strike out on a 3-2 pitch to end the game.
    Lahner earned the win as she improves to 10-8. She allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits with six strikeouts and a walk. Kirsten Wells took the loss as she allowed three runs on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks. She falls to 11-5 with the loss.
    Senior Shannon Wood (Harrisburg, PA/Bishop McDevitt) led the Spartan offense with two hits and a run scored. Brenneman had a hit and an RBI while Brugger also had a hit and an RBI.
    Dronenburg had two hits and two RBI to lead the Sea Gulls.
    The Spartans return to the field on Wednesday as they host Neumann in a non-conference double header. Game one is slated to begin at 3:00 pm.
