Six Women’s Wrestlers Qualify For Nationals

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - Six Spartans punched their tickets to nationals as the York women's wrestling team finished fourth out of 11 teams with 10 place winners at the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships (NCWWC) Region II Championships hosted by East Stroudsburg University on Sunday.

Daisey Hawkins (110 lbs.), Gisele Ramirez (117 lbs.), Maura White (138 lbs.), Kylie Monroe (145 lbs.), Allison Brandt (180 lbs.) and Emma Lavalle (207 lbs.) all finished inside the top-four in their respective weight classes which earned each of them a trip the NCWWC National Championships in Coralville, Iowa on March 7-8. White will be making her second appearance at the national tournament as she was York's lone representative last year. This year, the Spartan sophomore will be joined by five of her teammates as the program caps off just its second season of competition.

York also made a giant leap forward in the team standings at the regional tournament as the Green and White went from ninth to fourth from year one to year two. No. 14 Lock Haven won the team title with 155.5 points, followed by No. 17 East Stroudsburg (148.5), Ursinus (127), York (118.5) and Delaware Valley (68) to round out the top-five.

White became the programs first regional champion as she won the 138-pound bracket after defeating Ruth Ansah (ESU), 12-2, in the title bout. White also had a pair of falls as she went 4-0 on the day to improve her season record to 32-7. She is a two-time regional finalist and now a two-time national qualifier in just two seasons.

Ramirez continued her successful rookie campaign with a second-place finish at 117 pounds to earn a national tournament qualification. She went 2-1 on the day with a pair of falls to improve to 27-4 on the season with a team-leading 24 falls.

Hawkins, Monroe, Brandt and Lavalle all finished in fourth place to earn the last qualifying spots in their respective weight classes. Each wrestler went 2-2 on the day and they combined for five falls. Brandt is now a two-time regional place winner after finishing sixth last year, but she, Hawkins, Monroe and Lavalle will all be making their first appearance at nationals in two weeks.

Four other Spartans came up short of clinching a spot at the national tournament, but they did earn a spot on the regional podium. Those wrestlers included: Finley Hall (6th - 103), Barbara Hartman (6th - 131), Rebekah Patzke (6th - 145) and Ashley Knapp (6th - 160).
