HOWEY-IN-THE-WOODS, FLA – The York College women's golf squad saw their 2022-23 campaign come to an unexpected finish on Thursday at the Division III National Championships in Howey-in-the-Woods, Florida.
The third round was wiped out because of an unplayable hole (#6) and also because storms halted play with a number of teams, including the Spartans, still on the course.
The NCAA released the following statement regarding the round:
"The NCAA Division III Women's Golf Committee has determined that round three will officially be canceled on the grounds of an unplayable hole for the entire tournament field. As play continued throughout round three it became apparent that the pin placement on Hole 6 was too severe for play. With this decision being made, we will now conclude the championship as a 54-hole tournament with the final round being seeded off of the completion of round 2. The top-15 teams will advance to the final round, as well as the Top-12 individuals not on one of those 15 teams. Please note the committee elected to advance six additional individuals to the final round."
Spartan freshman
Tori Blanc has advanced to play as an individual in the final round. Blanc is tied for 48
th in the field and will get the chance to play 18 more holes during her first collegiate championships.
The cancelation of the third round ends the tremendous career of senior
Natalie Robson. Robson, a three-time first-team All-MAC performer, finished with a two-round total of 172. She concludes her career as one of the most decorated Spartans in school history. She was the 2021 MAC Rookie of the Year, the 2021 and 2022 MAC Player of the Year and a 2021 WGCA All-American while she also advanced to the final round of the NCAA Championships last spring.
Robson concludes her career owning the best single-season scoring average at 77.4 strokes per round in 2020-21. She also owns the third and fourth best scoring averages in school history. She boasts an average of 79.40 for her career, the top mark in Spartan history. Robson played 60 rounds in 35 events for the Spartans. She had five career individual championships, 22 top five finishes and 24 top ten finishes. Robson's low round of 71 came this year in the opening round of the Augustine Intercollegiate Tournament on April 1.
Blanc will take to the course for the final round at 9:40 off the tenth tee.
