Women's Golf Sits Seventh After Day One at Denison

The Spartans got a stellar round from senior Grace Strickland to lead the way

GRANVILLE, OHIO – The York College women's golf squad opened their 2025-26 campaign on Saturday with a trip to Granville, Ohio to participate in Denison's Lynn Schweizer Invitational at the Denison Golf Club.

After day one of the two-day tournament, the Spartans sit seventh of 13 teams with a score of 329. Randolph-Macon leads the team standings with a day one total of 306. DePauw is five strokes back in second while Christopher Newport is third at 314. Denison and Lynchburg are tied for fourth, eight strokes in front of York at 321.

Senior Grace Strickland led the way for the Spartans with an opening round 76. Strickland is one stroke out of third, two strokes out of second but seven strokes behind first round leader Becky Williams of DePauw, who tore up the Denison course with a four-under-par 69.

Strickland shot an even par 36 on the front with three pars, three birdies and three bogeys. She started off the back nine with four straight bogeys. After a par at 14, she eagled the par-five 15 before finishing par-bogey-par for the 76.

Victoria Jolakian and Ava Johnssen were the next two Spartans to finish as they both shot 83. Jolakian shot a seven-over-par 43 in the opening nine holes but she bounced back with a three-over-par 40, tying Strickland for the Spartans' best score on the back nine. Jolakian had four pars, four bogeys and a birdie on the 15th hole. Johnsen shot a 42 on the front before making the turn. She came home in four-over-par 41 for her 83.

Lily Davis was the final Spartan scorer in the tournament with a 14-over-par 87. She was one-under through her opening four holds but she had four bogeys and a double to finish with a five-over 41. She shot 46 on the back nine to finish with the 87.

Samiya Bodalia was York's fifth tournament participant as she shot 88. Bodalia shot 42 in the front before shooting a 46 on the back. She did have an eagle on 15 as York combined to shoot 21, with par being 25, on the 15th hole between the five Spartans.

York returns to action on Sunday afternoon starting at 12:20 pm.
