Women's Golf Opens Campaign in Ohio

York's opening tournament was shortened by rain at Denison

GRANVILLE, OHIO – The York College women's golf squad opened up their 2022-23 campaign with a rain-shortened stay at the Lynn Schweizer Invitational hosted by Denison University this weekend.

The tournament, which featured a trio of top 15 teams was cut short after heavy rains on Saturday night rendered the course unplayable for a Sunday round.

Washington U-St. Louis, the tenth ranked team in the country, won the tournament with a score of 297, edging Centre College by two strokes for the team championship. Host Denison finished third at 307 followed by Otterbein (310) and Alvernia (323).

York finished tied with Wooster at 339 as the Spartans finished 16 strokes out of a top five finish.

The Spartans have a much different look this year as they graduated four starters from last year's MAC Championship squad. York's lone returner is All-American Natalie Robson. Robson picked up where she left off last year as the two-time MAC Player of the Year shot 78 to finish tied for 16th in the field. Robson shot 37 on the front with a birdie, three bogeys and five pars. On the back, Robson had two birdies, four bogeys and a double as she shot 41 for her six-over-par 78.

Three freshmen followed Robson in the standings led by Grace Strickland as she shot an 86 to finish tied for 52nd. Strickland had a pair of double bogeys early in her round as she shot 42 on the front followed by a 44 on the back. Fellow freshman Tori Blanc was one stroke back of Strickland as she carded an 87. Blanc had eight bogeys and a par on the front for a 43. She had a double and five bogeys for a 44 on the back nine.

York's fourth scorer, freshman Brooke Zajac finished one stroke behind Blanc as she shot an 88. Zajac fired a 43 on the front with a double and six bogeys. She followed that with a 45 on the back including a triple on 13.

Jessica Shay was York's fifth tournament participant as she shot 91 for the tournament to finish tied for 67th.

The Spartans return to action in two weeks as they head to the NCAA Division III Women's Championship Preview at Mission Inn Resort and Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida. The two day tournament kicks off Sunday, September 18 and concludes on Monday, September 19.
