FLEETWOOD, PA – The York College women's golf team played great early and then hung on to post a first round lead at the two-day Golden Oaks Shootout at Golden Oaks Golf Club in Fleetwood, PA. That first round lead would hold up as Saturday's second round was canceled due to rain.Â
The Spartans finished with a two stroke win over Alvernia as York fired a team total of 313 while Alvernia shot 315. Gettysburg was third at 337 while Jefferson is a distant fourth in the nine team field at 351. The Spartans finished their last four holes a combined ten over par as they had a double figure advantage late in the round.
Senior
Natalie Robson and freshman
Tori Blanc led the Spartans with matching five-over-par 77's in the opening round as the duo are tied for third. Robson got off to a tough start with a double bogey on her opening hole, number 10. The senior then ripped off two pars and six pars over the next eight holes to make the turn at even. She doubled hole number one but again, bounced back with five straight pars. She ended her round with three bogeys to finish five over. The 77 is her low round so far this year.
Blanc started her round with a bogey, a par and a birdie as she was even through three. She had four bogeys over the next six holes for an opening nine 40. Blanc was great on the next nine as she had one birdie, six pars and two bogeys for a closing one-over-par 37. Her 77 is her new career collegiate low.Â
Freshman
Grace Strickland was York's third finisher on Friday as she shot a six-over-par 78. Strickland began her day on hole number 11. She birdied her opening hole and followed with a par and three bogeys. She had a pair of pars and another birdie before making the turn. Strickland had three pars, a birdie and five bogeys as she shot a 40 on the front. She ended her day with bogey on 10 to finish with her 78. Strickland is all alone in seventh place for the Spartans as the 78 is her new career low score.Â
Freshman
Brooke Zajac was York's fourth finisher as she shot an 81 to tie for 11
th place in the 50-player field. Zajac started on hole number 12 and was one over after 18 as she had four pars, a birdie and two bogeys. Zajac made the turn and bogeyed one and two before a par on three. She would go four over par in the next six holes to finish the nine at 42. She closed out her round with a double and a par to shoot 39 on holes 10 through 18. The 81 was her new collegiate low by seven strokes.Â
Freshman
Jessica Shay was York's fifth tournament starter and she finished tied for 26
th with a 90. Shay shot a 47 on her first nine holes and shot 43 on her second nine holes.
Freshman
Vivian D'Orazi played the tournament as an individual. She made her collegiate debut a successful one as she is 16
th after an opening round 85. D'Orazi shot 42 on her first nine followed by a 43 on her second for the 85.
Saturday's round was started but rained out midway through the round, reverting the tournament to an 18-hole event. The Spartans return to action on Tuesday, October 11 when they travel to the Hood Fall Invitational. The action is set for a noon start.Â
