WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS. – The York College women's golf squad had their best round of the year as they are sitting in first after round one of Williams Women's Golf Classic at Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown, Mass.
The Spartan fired a season-best score of 318 as they hold a nine-stroke lead over Wesleyan University heading into Sunday's second round. Bates is third at 334 followed by Bowdoin in fourth. Drew rounds out the top five in the eight-team field.
The Spartans were led by senior stalwart
Natalie Robson as she shot an opening round 78. Robson sits fourth individually as she is four strokes back of individual leader Danielle Landis from Wesleyan. Stevenson's Casey Oppenheimer and Bate's Maddy Kwei are tied for second at five-over-par.
Freshmen
Grace Strickland and
Jessica Shay both registered career-best rounds with eight-over-par 79's. The 79 for Strickland was her best effort by two strokes while Shay's score bested her previous best by 10 strokes.
Tori Blanc was York's fourth scorer as she shot 82 to finish tied for tenth. That ties her career low score. Fellow freshman
Brooke Zajac was York's fifth tournament participant and she finished tied for 17
th with an 88, which matches her career low score.
The Spartans will get back to action on Sunday morning with a shotgun start at 9:00 am.
