Field Hockey Places School-Record Five on All-Region Squad

The Spartans had more players on the Region V teams than any other program

YORK, PA – The York College field hockey program received outstanding news on Tuesday as the NFHCA announced their 2022 All-Region teams. There are six regions with each region being represented by a first and a second team.

The Spartans placed a school-record five players on the two Region V teams. Sophomore midfielder Riley Buschert, senior midfielder Mya Gerena, and junior defender Sara Pique earned first-team honors while sophomore goalie Belle Fields and junior forward Katie Martino were selected to the second-team. All five Spartans earned first-team All-MAC Commonwealth honors earlier in November.

The Spartans finished the 2022 campaign with a school-record 16 wins and their first-ever NCAA Tournament berth. The Spartans downed DeSales in the opening round before falling to top-seeded Salisbury in the second round.

Buschert had a fantastic sophomore year as she played in all 22 games with 21 starts. She tallied 22 points on seven goals and a team-leading eight assists. Buschert had a pair of game-winning goals during the year. She had a career night against Stevenson in late October with eight points on three goals and two assists.

Gerena was one of York's senior leaders for the 2022 year. She was incredibly valuable to the Spartans as a two-way standout in the midfield. Gerena, who played in the NFHCA Senior All-Star game last weekend, finished the year with one assist but her scoring is only a small part of her game. Gerena's ability to control the midfield paid huge dividends to the Spartan play during the year.

Pique makes her second NFHCA All-Region V appearance after being a second-team pick last fall. She is the eighth Spartan in school history to earn All-Region honors at least twice in her career. Pique, who switched to defense in the preseason, continued to be one of the best players in the region. Pique headlined a defense that finished the year with a school-record 13 shutouts and a 0.63 goals against average in 22 games. York allowed just 14 goals during the year. Pique also made her presence felt on penalty corners with eight points on two goals and four assists. She did register one defensive save for the campaign.

Fields earns her first-ever All-Region honor after earning the starting goalie job in preseason camp. Fields finished the year with a record of 15-6, was a part of 12 shutouts. She played 1,154 minutes with a goals against average of 0.73 and a save percentage of .781. Fields notched six individual shutouts for the year. Fields goals against average of 0.73 set a new single-season record for the Spartans.

Martino finished a dynamic junior year as she concluded the year as York's leading scorer. Martino played in and started 21 games as she capped the year with 39 points on 18 goals and three assists. Martino had a school-record tying six game-winning goals. Her 39 points ties her for eighth on the all-time single season list.

The Spartans' five All-Region picks were tops among Region V schools. The Spartans' three first-team selections ties them with Bryn Mawr, a team York beat 5-0 in the regular season, for tops in the region. Johns Hopkins, Bryn Mawr, and Messiah each placed four players on the two squads.
