Wolf Reaches 100 Career Points as #3 York Cruises Past Messiah

GRANTHAM, PA – The third-ranked York College men's lacrosse team set a new standard to start the season as they improved to 8-0 with a 20-4 win at Messiah University on Wednesday night. The 8-0 start to the campaign bests the previous best start of 7-0 during the 2016 season. Senior Dylan Wolf notched three goals in the win as became the 17th Spartan in school history to reach 100 career points.

 

How It Happened

• The Spartans jumped on the Falcons early and often as the Green and White scored three goals in the first five minutes of the game. Senior Dylan Wolf, who entered the game two points short of 100 for his career, opened the scoring a mere 34 seconds into the game with his 21st goal of the year. Jacob Wilhelm and Gavin Dembeck were the other two Spartans to score early. Senior Brendan O'Sullivan added back to back goals to push York's lead to 5-0. Wolf scored a second goal, a man up tally, at the 4:49 mark to reach 100 career points. Ames Clark finished off the first quarter scoring with a goal off a Michael Russo assist with 44 seconds left in the period.

• The Spartan lead grew to 11-0 before the Falcons finally got on the scoreboard with a Lucas Honebrink goal. Dembeck and O'Sullivan each scored before the half as York took a 13-1 lead to the intermission.

• O'Sullivan and Russo scored to kick off the third period before Messiah scored at the 6:55 mark, trimming the York lead to 15-2. Cole Witman and Chandler Schmidt each notched goals before the end of the third as the Spartans led 17-2.

• York scored the first three goals of the fourth period including two goals in the opening 42 seconds of the period with O'Sullivan and senior Ethan Locker scoring to make it 19-2. Marenger scored York's final goal with 9:27 left in the game before the Falcons tacked on a pair of tallies in the final seven minutes of the game to provide the final score.

 

Spartan Leaders

York was led by Brendan O'Sullivan as he notched five goals with three ground balls … senior Dylan Wolf added four points on three goals and one assist as he now has 102 career points, good for 15th on the all-time scoring list … Gavin Dembeck notched three goals while Michael Russo had four points on two goals and two assists … Russo's four points were a new career high … sophomore Vinny Facciponti had another strong day at the X as he was 12-for-18 with nine ground balls … Connor Madsen took the remaining seven face offs and won six of them … Brett Locker contributed four ground balls and one caused turnover … junior goalie Jack Michael earned his 31st career win as he is now 31-5 all-time in the York net.

 

Spartan Notes

The Spartans are now 4-2 all-time against Messiah, snapping a two-game skid against the Falcons … the last meeting between the two programs on March 7, 2015 … senior Dylan Wolf became the 17th Spartan to reach 100 career points as he now sits 15th on the all-time list with 102 points as he passed Adam Cross (100 points) and Ben Libertini (101 points) on the all-time list in the win … Wolf now has 58 points and 44 assists for his Spartan career … Wolf is 17th on the all-time goal scoring list and 16th on the all-time assists list … the Spartans improved to 6-0 on the road as they have won 17 straight on the road, a new program record … York outscored the Falcons 7-0 in the first quarter and now have outscored their eight opponents 48-5 in the opening quarter while they have outshot their opponents 128-43 in the opening stanza … Wolf and Brendan O'Sullivan have proven to be a potent scoring tandem for York as they lead the team in scoring with 33 and 32 points respectively … Wolf has 33 points on 23 goals and 10 assists while O'Sullivan has 29 goals and three assists for 32 points … the Spartans lead the MAC Commonwealth in average margin of victory at 13.9 goals per game … York leads the league in ground balls (347) and caused turnovers (106) … junior goalie Jack Michael is now five wins behind Landry Marshall (36 wins) for second on the all-time goalie wins list … former All-American Caleb Abney ranks first in goalie wins with 53 … senior Tyler Nation collected three more ground balls as he now has 138 for his career as he moved into 15th place on the all-time ground balls list … the Spartans have scored 20 or more goals in four of their eight games as they average 19.75 goals per game … York dished out 11 assists in the game and that's the fourth time they have reached double figures in the category … York had 10 players scored at least one goal in the game … York scored a season-high three man up goals in the win … the Spartan goalies combined for 10 saves, their fourth double figure save effort of the year.

The Spartans begin a season-high three game homestand on Saturday when they host Lebanon Valley College in a MAC Commonwealth contest. First face off is set for 1:00 pm.
