Spartans Clip Ducks in Top-20 Battle

Box Score

YORK, Pa. - The York College men's lacrosse team returned home for the first time in 28 days to post a 14-9 victory in a nationally-ranked MAC crossover matchup with Stevens on Saturday.

Team Records

#18/RV Stevens 4-2

#6/5 York 7-0

How it happened

The Spartans set the tone right from the start. The Ducks won the opening faceoff, but Brendan O'Sullivan disrupted a cross field pass on the ensuing clear attempt that caused a Stevens' turnover seven seconds into the game, which then led directly to a Dylan Wolf goal. The Spartans would go on to rip off four-straight tallies in the first quarter before the Ducks finally got on the board with 2:01 left. York owned a 5-1 lead after the first 15 minutes of play and caused five Stevens turnovers in the opening frame.

The Ducks cut their deficit to two goals through the early part of the second quarter as they capitalized on a Spartan penalty and later on a turnover by York. The close margin was short-lived as York regrouped and scored three unanswered goals to end the first half, led by Wolf's two tallies.

Will Harnick put the Spartans ahead by six with his tally in the opening minute of the second half, but an early Spartan penalty proved costly as the Ducks cashed in on the man-advantage to cut the Spartan lead back to five. Stevens fought through a few of their own miscues and tough defensive play by York to get another goal 1:32 later to pull within five. However, that would prove to be the high water mark for the Ducks as York countered with two quick goals, less than a minute apart to take an 11-5 lead at the end of third quarter.

The Spartans came out hot in the fourth quarter. Noah Bruno Tyler Nation and Zach Mentzer each registered a caused turnover in the first three minutes as the offense capitalized with a pair of goals to take a 13-5 advantage and put the game out of reach. The Ducks managed to pad the stats with a few garbage time goals in the last eight minutes, but the game was never in doubt down the stretch.

Up next

The Spartans head back on the road and resume MAC Commonwealth play on Wednesday with a short trip to Messiah. Opening face off is set for 7 p.m.

Notes

The Spartans improve to 7-0 which matches the best start in program history from 2016 during which York knocked of ranked opponents #10 Roanoke and #5 Gettysburg on that run … York is now on an eight-game winning streak dating back to last season, including a three-game win streak at home … today's meeting was the first-ever between York and Stevens … York's 16 goals today is the most by a Stevens' opponent this season, while Stevens' nine goals is the second-fewest the Ducks have tallied this year … with his career-high tying three caused turnovers on the day Tyler Nation passed current Spartan assistant coach Matt Whicher and moves into a tie with Dan Wood for 8th place on the all-time list at 50 caused turnovers … Dylan Wolf established a career-high with five goals as he matched his career-high with seven points on the day and now sits at 98 career points … Will Harnick also matched his career-high with six points on the day, including a career-high tying four goals … Zach Mentzer established a new career-high with his three caused turnovers on the day … Jack Michael collected his 30th career win as he becomes just the third Spartan goalie to record 30 wins.
