YORK, PA – The York College Athletic Department is pleased to announce the 2020 Athletic Hall of Fame Class has been selected for enshrinement the fall. April (McFarland) Bastress (field hockey), Erin (Kuhn) Cangelosi (women's soccer), Emily (Sullivan) Donatelli (women's soccer), Kyle Flickinger (wrestling), Ryan Poff (baseball), Evan Scheffey (men's soccer), and Keli Ward (women's basketball) form this year's class. The seven honorees comprise the 30th class in the history of the Spartan Athletic Hall of Fame.
Bastress was a Spartan field hockey standout who graduated in 2009. Bastress ended her time in York second on the all-time points list (115), first in goals (53), and third in game-winning goals (13). She played in 81 career games for the Spartans with 79 career starts. Bastress was a two-time All-Capital Athletic Conference selection in addition to being the 2005 CAC Rookie of the Year Award winner. Bastress's best year was her last as she recorded 38 points on 18 goals and two assists as a senior in 2008. Two of those goals were game-winners for York. Bastress had double digits in goals in three of her four years and had at least 19 points in every year of her career.
Cangelosi and Donatelli were on the forefront of the women's soccer team making a jump to that of a regional contender. The duo helped lead the Spartans to the program's first Capital Athletic Conference Championship in 2007 and followed that by advancing to the NCAA Division III Sweet 16 in their first national tournament appearance. The Spartans went 55-20-9 during their career, the greatest four-year stretch in Spartan history.
Cangelosi graduated in 2008 as one of the most decorated players in the history of the women's soccer program. She as a three-time first-team All-CAC selection at forward as she played in and started all 85 games of her career. Cangelosi tallied 49 goals and dished out 31 assists for 129 points. She recorded 12 game-winning goals for the Spartans. She was named a 2006 NSCAA All-Region selection during her junior year. Cangelosi still owns the school record for career points and career goals while she ranks second in game-winning goals. She owns the single-season school record with 49 points (2006) and goals with 17 (2006) while she is also fourth in single-season points (30 in 2005) and fifth in single-season goals (11 in both 2004 and 2005).
Donatelli was the other half of the high scoring duo with Cangelosi. Donatelli had 116 career points on 41 goals and 34 assists in 85 games for the Spartans from 2004-2007. She registered 10 game-winning goals and scored at least 19 points in all four of her Spartan seasons. She was a four-time first-team All-CAC selection including being named the 2004 CAC Rookie of the Year. Donatelli's name is all over the Spartans' women's soccer record book. She is second in career points, second in career goals and first in career assists while she is third in career game-winning goals. Her name is also frequent in single season categories as she is second and third in points (37 in 2004 and 32 in 2006), second and fifth goals (14 in 2004 and 11 in 2006), and second and third in assists (10 in 2006 and nine in 2004).
Flickinger was one of the winningest wrestlers in the rich history of the Spartan program. When he graduated in 2009, he held the school record for victories as he was 114-40 during his career. He currently sits third on the all-time wins list and is one five Spartans in school history to reach 100 career wins. Flickinger had a huge junior year as he went 30-8 in 2007-08 including winning the Metropolitan Conference individual championship at 125 pounds and was also the conference's Most Outstanding Wrestler. He was a two-time Metro Conference champion at 125 while he was a two-time NCAA Division III National Qualifier. Flickinger was a 2007 Division III All-American for the Green and White. Flickinger was a part of 62 Spartan dual meet wins over his four years.
Poff was a dynamic offensive force for the Spartan baseball squad from 2006-09. He made a splash as a freshman as he was the first, and only, Capital Athletic Conference baseball player to earn the league's Rookie of the Year award and also be named the conference's Player of the Year. He was a four-time All-CAC honoree and was twice named to the ABCA All-South Region squad. Poff played in 172 career games as he hit .385 with 171 runs scored, 65 doubles, 10 triples, 17 home runs, and 154 RBI. He owned a .582 slugging percentage with 402 total bases. Poff had a .428 on-base percentage, stole 23 bases, and collected 266 hits. He is the Spartans' all-time leader in hits and total bases. He is second in doubles, third in runs scored, and fourth in RBIs. He owns the all-time CAC record in hits and total bases while he is second in doubles. Poff owns the Spartans' single season record for doubles while he is third in triples, fourth in hits and RBIs. The Spartans won 98 games during Poff's career and the team made two NCAA Tournament appearances during his time in the Green and White.
Scheffey was a dominate defender on the most successful four-year run of Spartan men's soccer. The Spartan men's soccer squad went 78-5-9 during Scheffey's career that spanned from 2005-08. The Green and White earned a pair of Capital Athletic Conference Tournament championships and earned four NCAA Tournament berths. The Spartans made trips to the NCAA Elite Eight in 2007 and 2008. Scheffey was a three-time first-team All-CAC defender, earned NSCAA All-Region honors three times and was a third-team All-American in 2008. He was a three-year captain who is tied for career starts (86) and second in games played (92) all-time for York. Scheffey was a captain of a defense that allowed just three goals during 2008 while York posted a school-record 17 shutouts. The Spartans had a 49-match unbeaten streak and an 18-game win streak during Scheffey's time in the Green and White. Scheffey returned to York in March of 2015 and is entering his sixth season as the head men's soccer coach.
Ward graduated as one of the most dynamic and versatile players in the history of the women's basketball program. Ward was a starter from the time she stepped on campus. She re-wrote the Spartan record books from 2005-2009. Ward played in 109 games with 108 starts in the Green and White. She averaged 14.0 points, 7.3 rebounds, 5.9 assists, 2.1 steals, and 0.6 blocked shots per game as the Spartans' point guard. Ward shot 47.3% from the floor, 36.5% from three and 80.2% from the free throw line. She led the Spartans on a historic season as a senior as the Spartans notched a record of 27-3, the program's first ever NCAA Tournament appearance as the Spartans advanced to the Sweet 16. She became York's first women's basketball All-American as she earned first-team honors. Ward's name remains all over the Spartan record book. She is seventh in scoring (1,523 points), eighth in points per game, seventh in field goals made (545), fifth in field goal percentage, third in three-pointers made (157), third in three pointers attempted (430), sixth in three point field goal percentage (.356), seventh in free throws made (276), fourth in free throw percentage (.802), fifth in rebounds (800), eighth in rebounds per game, second in assists (640), second in assists per game, sixth in steals (231), eighth in steals per game, sixth in games played and fifth in games started. She is also second in minutes per game (34.2 minutes per game). Ward was the 2005-06 CAC Rookie of the Year and the 2008-09 CAC Player of the Year. She was also a four-time All-CAC selection as a Spartan.
The Hall of Fame Ceremony is tentatively slated for early October as part of the Spartans' Fall Fest Weekend celebrations.
