How it Happened:
• York and Mary Washington entered the matchup as the only undefeated teams remaining in the Capital Athletic Conference, but it was the Eagles who struck first, less than two minutes into the first quarter on an extra-man opportunity. York responded well, though, bouncing back with two goals in just 1:08 with Dillon Hannah tying the game before freshman Jake Hvazda took the lead for the Spartans. Brad Casale, who entered the night scoring five in the last three games, pushed the lead to 3-1 before Mary Washington cut the deficit in half with 2:08 left in the opening period.
• Thomas Pfeiffer opened the second quarter with a goal, his 30th of the season, but again the Eagles had an answer with 10:05 left in the half. The Spartans finished the half with some punishing play, capturing their opportunities on the offensive end while shutting Mary Washington down on the other end. Hannah, Pfeiffer and Hvazda all notched goals to create some separation and give York a 7-3 halftime lead.
• York began the second half controlling possession and running some clock. In each of its first three possessions, the Spartans were able to click minutes off with good ball movement. Conversely, Mary Washington had just three chances in the first seven minutes, working just one shot that Landry Marshall saved, but on the other two occasions, the Eagles were unable to successfully clear. That was an issue all night for Mary Washington, finishing just 9-for-22 in clear opportunities. At the midway point of the third quarter, Hannah scored the first goal of the second half, faking a shot, working a better angle and then unleashing one past the goalie. On the play, UMW was called for a penalty, giving the Spartans an extra-man opportunity directly after the goal. That possession also proved vital as Hannah launched another shot from long range, scoring his fourth of the game and pushing the York advantage to 9-3. Billy Sasso won the next face off, and Mary Washington was called for another penalty, which the Spartans took advantage of yet again. Hannah found Ryan Cook and in just 2:23, the Green and White pushed its lead to 10-3. They weren't done, though. Sasso won another face off and Matt Whitcher fired one from his left hand side with 4:51 to play in the third. York's incredible quarter still wasn't done, because Casale made it 12-3 with 3:47 left. With 2:32 left, Hvazda worked his way just outside the crease untouched, received a pass from Hannah and nonchalantly tossed it into the goal. In total, the Spartans blitzed UMW for six goals in just 4:54 to take a 13-3 lead towards the latter stages of the third. The Eagles got one back with 1:09 to play in the period.
• York continued controlling the clock and possession for most of the fourth quarter, and just over six minutes ran off before Hannah scored again, his fifth of the game, matching a career high. Hunter Davis added his first of the night, taking a pass from Hvazda and easily finishing, making it 15-4. Casale finished the night off as York cruised to a 16-4 home win at Kinsley Field.
