YORK, PA – The York College men's lacrosse squad used an eight goal third quarter to down #7 Salisbury University 15-6 in the Capital Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

The Spartans tallied three goals during a two-minute non-releasable penalty early in the third quarter that turned the tide of the game. The loss snaps Salisbury's 27 game regular season conference win streak.

How It Happened

• The first quarter featured sloppy play and missed shots as neither team could muster any sustained offense. The Spartans outshot the Sea Gulls 5-4 while there were a combined 10 turnovers as the teams went to the second quarter locked in a scoreless tie.

• The Spartans opened the scoring with 11:24 left in the second quarter as Ryan Cook picked up a ground ball off a saved shot and finished the chance to put the Spartans on the board. Salisbury's Pierre Armstrong wasted little time in tying the game as he scored after a York turnover, knotting the game at one. Just over four minutes later, Corey Gwin gave the Gulls a 2-1 win off a pass from Josh Melton. Senior Matt Whitcher tied the game 38 seconds later with a goal off a Jake Hvazda assist. Each team scored another goal as the squads headed to the intermission tied at three.

• The Sea Gulls began the second half on the man-up as York was whistled for a 30 second penalty with 20 ticks left in the first half. They converted that chance as Gwin notched the man-up goal nine seconds into the third period.

• The Spartans quickly answered Gwin's goal with a Cook goal 47 seconds later. Salisbury's John Wheeler hit Cook high after the goal, drawing a two-minute non-releasable penalty. The Spartans made the Sea Gulls pay as York banged out three goals during that two-minute stretch. Hunter Davis, Thomas Pfeiffer, and Davis a second time pushed the Spartan lead to 7-4 with 12:04 left in the third quarter.

• Salisbury got a third goal from Gwin but the Spartans finished the quarter with a four goal spurt to push the lead to 11-5 heading to the fourth.

• The Spartan offense continued to click in the fourth as they outscored Salisbury 5-1 started with another man-up goal to open the quarter as Hvazda notched the man-up goal just 23 seconds into the fourth.
