Ruleman's Big Day Lifts Spartans to Sweep of McDaniel; Win Streak Reaches Seven

WESTMINSTER, MD – The York College softball squad pushed their win streak to seven games with a pair of non-conference road wins at McDaniel College on Sunday afternoon in Westminster, Maryland. The Spartans won game one 9-3 and completed the sweep with a 10-4 victory in the nightcap.

How It Happened

• The Spartans kicked off the scoring with two in the second and two more in the third as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Joanna Marmo accounted for York's two runs in the third with a two run home run.

Quinn Fisher made it 5-0 in the top of the fourth with an RBI single. Ashley Werner then had an RBI single in the top of the fifth to push the York lead to 6-0.

• The Spartans put up a three spot in the top of the sixth as Carleigh Ruleman blasted a three run shot to left.

• The Green Terror broke up the shutout with a three spot of their own in the bottom of the sixth to provide for the final six run Spartan margin of victory.

How It Happened

• Much like game one, the Spartans jumped on top early with single runs in the first and second innings to give York the 2-0 lead.

• After a quiet third inning, the Spartans broke the game open with a four run fourth inning. Joanna Marmo and Carleigh Ruleman each had a pair of RBI in the frame. Marmo's came on a two-run single while Ruleman blasted a two runs shot to right field.

• The Green Terror got on the board in the bottom of the first with a pair of runs on three hits.

• York got those two runs back in the top of the fifth. Julie Van O'Linda had an RBI ground out while Katie Maloney had a sacrifice fly as York led 8-2.

• McDaniel trimmed the York lead to 8-2 with a single run in the bottom of the second.

• York got a two run single from Marmo for their ninth and tenth runs of the game.

• The Green Terror got a run back in the bottom of the seventh but York still cruised to the 10-4 win.

 

SPARTAN NOTES:

The teams have split their last eight meetings … for the second time this year, senior Carleigh Ruleman hit home runs in both games of a doubleheader … Ruleman has hit eight home runs in her last 13 games … Ruleman now has 11 home runs for the year as she already owns the single season and career home run marks for York … Ruleman owns a team-best .504 on-base percentage … Ruleman is fourth in RBI (32) and first in the CAC in home runs …. The next closest player to her in the CAC in home runs is six … junior Melissa Jurkiewicz earned her 30th career win on Sunday … freshman Ginger Lewis has won her last three starts as she has thrown 19 innings, allowed 18 hits with 17 strikeouts and just two walks … Lewis has allowed five earned runs in the 19 innings during the streak.

 

UP NEXT:

The Spartans return to action on Tuesday when they step out of league play with a trip of Elizabethtown College. The twin bill is slated for a 3:00 pm start in Elizabethtown, PA.
