How it Happened:

• Lynchburg got off to a good start as they struck for the first two goals of the game. Andrew Thomas opened the scoring 2:37 into the game. Daniel Owens made it 2-0 with another unassisted goal with 5:35 left in the first.

• York answered with a pair of goals in the final five minutes of the first quarter. Senior Joseph Joseph scored off a pass from sophomore Hunter Davis with 4:27 left in the quarter. York's second goal came from Cameron Leech as he scored off a feed from Thomas Pfeiffer to beat the shot clock with 54 seconds remaining in the first.

• York pushed out to a 4-2 lead less than three minutes into the second quarter as Brendan McGrath and Pfeiffer found the back of the net to open the second period of play. The Hornets responded with three straight goals to close out the half. Kevin Rogers scored at the 7:19 mark and then Thomas scored twice more before the end of the stanza as the Hornets took a 5-4 lead to the break.

• The third period was a quiet one offensively as both teams were limited to one goal. Colin Dean recorded Lynchburg's tally at the 9:12 mark while McGrath got York's goal with just 2:21 left in the third. The Spartans outshot the Hornets 9-6 in the quarter.

• The Spartans looked to take control in the fourth quarter as they opened the frame with three straight goals to take an 8-6 lead. The last Spartan goal came from Joseph with 6:26 left in the game.

• After York's goal, York was called for an unnecessary roughness penalty with 6:00 left in the game. The Spartans weathered the penalty as Landry Marshall made another big save but Lynchburg's lengthy possession would eventually result in a Colin Dean goal with 4:41 remaining in regulation.

• York won the ensuing face off but then turned it over as the Hornets had possession and a chance to tie. They would tie the game with 3:24 left as Thomas notched his fourth goal of the game off a feed from Rogers.

• York won the final face off of regulation and had four shots at the game-winning goal over the final three minute of regulation. The best chance came from McGrath as his shot from the right wing just slid over the cross bar and flew out of bounds with 31 seconds left. The two teams would head to overtime knotted at eight.

• The Spartans won the opening face off of overtime. On the first Spartan possession the York shot was blocked but the Spartans forced a turnover on the clear and McGrath got a great look with 1:21 left but Lynchburg goalie CJ Santora made the stop. The Spartans forced a second failed clear and McGrath had another good look but Santora was up to the task as the game headed to a second overtime.

• The Hornets won the face off to start the second overtime and York was called for a pushing foul but Joey Fiorino caused a Lynchburg turnover to kill off the penalty. York committed a turnover on the ensuing possession as the Hornets got another chance. Evan Lombardo's shot was saved by Marshall but the Hornets got another penalty on the Spartans with 2:06 left in the overtime. Marshall came up big again as he made a save on Daniel Owens on the man up attempt. The Spartans got a ground ball and cleared the ball but turned it over in their offensive end. The Hornets got the ball and ended the game with a shot from Lombardo with 1:04 remaining in the second extra session.

Spartan Notes:

The Spartans are now 0-2 against the Hornets in the brief series … The Spartans, who entered the game with 20 man up opportunities in their previous three games, did not go on the man up in the entire game as Lynchburg was not whistled for a single infraction in the game … conversely, the Spartan man down defense was forced into action five times as York was penalized five times for four minutes … York has only surrendered two goals in 17 man-down chances … the Spartan man-up unit is 12-for-20 (.600) for the year … sophomore Landry Marshall made a career-high 17 saves as he was outstanding in the loss … York has been outscored 12-10 in the first quarter in four games this year but have outscored their opponents 59-23 in the final three quarters of play … the eight Spartans goals were the first time York has been held below 12 goals in a game … the loss is the first time this season that York did not score at least two man-up goals … the Spartans' 33 ground balls were a season low … York's 17 turnovers marked their second highest total of the year … York's last two losses have come in overtime.
