Men's Lacrosse Fends Off St. Mary's for 15-11 CAC Victory

YORK, Pa. – The No. 4 Spartans earned a 15-11 victory at home on Wednesday afternoon after holding off a spirited effort by St. Mary's College in a Capital Athletic Conference matchup at Kinsley Field.

 

The Basics:

How it happened:

  • The Spartans could not have drawn up a better start to a game as they led 5-0 at the end of the first quarter with 10 of their 15 shots landing on goal and allowing just one by the Seahawks.
  • Andrew Gamble did most of the heavy lifting in the opening quarter for York as she scored three of his team-high four goals in the quarter. The senior captain finished the game with four goals on four shots.
  • After recording just one shot in the first quarter, the Seahawks out-shot the Spartans 14-8 in the second quarter matched York in scoring with for goals in the second, including a three-goal run to open the period.
  • York regained some momentum in the final minute of the first half as Nick Magnusson tallied a goal with 20 seconds left and Gamble added one on the man-advantage with thee seconds remaining to give York a 9-4 lead heading into halftime.
  • The Spartans broke the game open early in the third quarter as goals by Thomas Pfeiffer and Magnusson extended the lead to 11-4.
  • The Seahawks refused to go away quietly as they ripped off four unanswered goals in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 11-8.
  • A goal in the final minute of the third quarter by Austin Glab, piggy-backed by a goal in the first minute of the fourth quarter by Dillon Hannah gave the Spartans the comfort level they needed to carry them to the finish as they went ahead 14-8 at that point.
  • St. Mary's still managed to tack on three more goals in the final quarter, but could not muster up enough offense to overtake the lead.

Game Notes:

Spartans have won the last four meetings with St. Mary's, but the Seahawks still have an overwhelming lead in the all-time series … York has now scored 15 or more goals in each of the last three games and have scored double-digit goals in eight of 10 games this season … the 11 goals St. Mary's scored is the most York has allowed all season and the only time an opponent has reached double-figures this season … the Spartan defense, which ranks ninth in the country in scoring defense, was allowing just 5.80 goals per game coming into today's game … today's matchup was the first meeting between sibling head coaches Brandon Childs and Jason Childs as Jason is in his first season at St. Mary's … Gamble extends his point streak to 11 games with four goals today and has scored multiple goals in nine of those 11 games … the senior now has 198 points for his career and will become just the second player in program history to reach 200 career points … Hannah also kept his 11-game point streak in tact with his three points today … Glab extended his goal streak to nine games as he tied his season-high with three goals today … Hunter Davis got back on the score sheet with a goal and assist as he now has points in 10 of the 11 games this season and ranks second on the team in goals (16) and points (24).
