#14 Lynchburg Snaps Spartan Win Streak at Seven

Box Score

YORK, PA – The York College men's lacrosse saw their seven game win streak come to a halt as the #14 Lynchburg College Hornets earned a 9-7 win during day two of the Green Turtle Classic hosted by Stevenson University on a very snowy Saturday afternoon in Owings Mills, Maryland. The sixth-ranked Spartans fall to 7-1 overall while the Hornets improve to 4-4.

How it happened:

• The Spartans got off to a good start as they scored the lone goal in the first quarter. Freshman Hunter Davis scored off a pass from fellow freshman Nick Magnusson for the 1-0 York lead with 3:18 left in the quarter.

• York took a 2-0 lead less than five minutes into the second quarter as Dillon Hannah converted a Magnusson assist for his tenth goal of the year.

• The dangerous Lynchburg offense got on the board 24 seconds later as All-American Austin Stewart found the back of the net off a pass from Aaron Murphy. Harrison Brennan tied the game on an unassisted goal 1:04 later as the game was knotted at two.

• The Hornets seized control of the game early in the third quarter as they got goals from Aaron Murphy, Evan Lombardo and Chris Cornelius to push out to a 5-2 lead with 9:52 left in the third.

• Freshman Thomas Pfeiffer stopped the run with an unassisted goal at the 7:32, trimming York's deficit to 5-3.

• Lombardo struck again with 2:07 left to get the lead back to three before Austin Glab made it 6-4 with 25 seconds left in the third.

• The Green and White pulled even at six in the fourth as Davis scored 58 seconds into the fourth quarter. Senior defender Josh Kluver then tied the game with an unassisted goal 22 seconds later as York look poised to steal a win.

• Lynchburg responded to York's spurt with a game-clinching three goal run as Stewart and Jacob Fuller scored within a minute of each other to take a 8-6 lead. Aaron Murphy closed out the Lynchburg scoring with an unassisted goal with 2:12 left in the game.

• Senior Andrew Gamble made it a two goal final as he scored a goal from Glab with 1:49 left. York would be unable to get any closer as they suffered their first loss of the year.

Notes:

The Spartans have their school-record tying win streak snapped at seven … the 7-0 start was the best in school history and the 7-1 start ties the best eight game start in school history (2014) … the game today closes out a stretch of four games in five against nationally ranked squads as York went 4-1 during that stretch … the game completes a stretch of three games in four days with two coming against nationally ranked squads … York has one non-conference game remaining on the schedule as they will travel back to Stevenson to face the Mustangs on April 8 at 7:00 pm … The Spartans committed a season-high 17 turnovers in the loss … York's 18 shots on goal were the lowest total of the year … York forced just five caused turnovers, tying their lowest total of the year … Hunter Davis kept his point streak alive as he netted two goals for two points in the game … Conrad Ordakowski has scooped up 16 ground balls in his last three games including a career-high six in the win over #9 Nazareth on Friday.

They Said It:

"Our kids played really hard today. Having a ground ball advantage (32-26) against a team like Lynchburg is no easy task. I thought we didn't execute good enough on offense in the first half. I thought we played great on offense in the fourth quarter but we just didn't finish our chances. I think we learned a great deal about ourselves this weekend. We know what we need to do moving forward in conference play."
