Herman's Hat Trick Leads Spartans to 5-1 Win

DOVER, DEL – The York College women's soccer squad got a natural hat trick from junior Maxine Herman as the Spartans rolled past Wesley College 5-1 in Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night in Dover, Delaware.

How It Happened

• The Wolverines jumped on top of the Spartans early as Janiah Moore scored off a double assist from Kayla Ryan and Summer Stone. Moore's goal came in the eighth minute of the game. The goal came on the first shot of the game.

• After putting consistent pressure on the Wesley net, the Spartans finally broke through for the equalizer in the 37th minute. Freshman Georgia Gillcrist laced a ball the box in front of the goal mouth. Caitlin Rankin was on the receiving end of the pass and tucked the shot inside the far post for her fifth goal of the year.

• The Spartans outshot Wesley 11-2 in the opening half while they also held a 3-0 margin in corner kicks.

• The Maxine Herman show started just 1:09 after the half. She started her three goal barrage as she collected a clear 20 yards out and fired a left footed chip shot into the upper left 90 for the eventual game winning-goal.

• Herman scored her second goal of the game in the 56th minute. She dribbled through the heart of the Wesley defense and drilled a shot from the 18 for the 3-1 Spartan lead.

• She concluded her natural hat trick with a goal in the 57th minute. Gillcrist blew past the Wesley defense on the right side. She hit a beautiful centering pass to Herman who finished the opportunity from 12 yards out to give the Spartans a 4-1 lead.

• The Spartans final goal came in the 75th minute as Allyson Badman hit a 40-yard free kick to the far post. Wesley keeper Sam Brannigan batted the ball up but Corie Elliott hit a full volley at the six yard line into the back netting for her fourth goal of the year.

The Spartans are now 15-0-1 all-time against Wesley as they have won four straight in the series …  York has won two in a row for the second time this season … York has scored nine goals in their last two games … Prior to the last two games, York had scored 12 goals in 13 games … Maxine Herman's hat trick was her second collegiate three goal game as her other hat trick came in the October 7, 2014 win over Marymount … Herman's hat trick came in the span of just 10:07 of game … 17 of the Spartans' 21 goals have come in their five victories … Caitlin Rankin, fresh of being named the CAC Offensive Player of the Week, scored in her second straight game as she now has 12 points on five goals and two assists … Rankin and Herman lead the team in goals with five each.

 

Up Next:

The Spartans return to Graham Field on Saturday and will close out their regular season with two straight home games. The first contest will be against Salisbury University on Saturday afternoon at 12:00 pm. The game will be preceded by the Spartans 2016 Senior Day ceremonies.
