Women’s Soccer Season Halted in Commonwealth Semifinals

YORK, Pa. - The second-seeded York women's soccer team was upended by third-seeded Stevenson, 2-1, in a Commonwealth semifinal contest at Graham Field on Tuesday night.

Despite being out-shot 24-5 including a 12-4 margin in shots on goal, the Mustangs made the most of their few opportunities to pull off the upset. Stevenson's leading scorer Kamille Purcell netted the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute of play for her seventh tally of the season and third game-winning goal.

How It Happened
The Spartans harassed the Mustang defense from the opening whistle and racked up seven total shots in the first 28 minutes. York finally broke through on their eighth shot of the game in the 28th minute of play when Meg Kalthof finished off a high arcing service from Carissa Baugus for her 15th goal of the season.

The Spartan lead was short-lived as the Mustangs tied the game on a free kick opportunity in the 32nd minute. The ball was spotted just outside the 18-yard line and the Mustangs turned to Isabella Pecunes to take the kick. The midfielder left no doubt as she nailed a well-placed shot just high enough to evade the reach of Spartan keeper Joss Metz and slip just under the crossbar.

York continued to pour on the pressure throughout the second half and racked up a 13-3 shot advantage with a 6-1 edge in corner kicks. Mustang keeper Isabella Serano continually denied the Spartans with an impressive performance as racked up eight saves in the half and disrupted several corner set piece plays.

Arguably the turning point of the game came in the 65th minute when the Spartans were awarded a penalty kick after a foul occurred deep in the box. Kalthof, the conference's leading scorer, took the kick for York and even had Serano fooled as she initially jumped to the right side of the goal, but unfortunately Kalthof's shot curled just too far left and ended up going wide of the goal.

The door was now left open for the Mustangs and in one fell swoop they jumped out in front with less than 10 minutes in regulation. Stevenson had a throw-in on the far sideline that found its way to Karly Sheahan who played a centering pass to Kamille Purcell. Purcell one-touched Sheahan's pass and quickly ripped a shot from inside the box past a sprawling Metz for the go-ahead goal.

The Spartans went into scramble mode and managed to generate some opportunities. With 38 seconds left, Lexi Mazzella had the ball on her foot and created shooting space for herself from 10 yards out, but her shot was again denied by Serano who notched her 11th save of the night to seal the win.
