Box Score BALTIMORE, MD – The York College men's soccer team experienced a common result when they squared off against John Hopkins University in the annual I-83 rivalry. The Hopkins men recorded a 1-0 win in the tightly contested match as they ended a four game winless streak against the Spartans.
The common result when these two teams meet is a one-goal decision. The squads have played 10 straight games with the winner earning the victory by one goal. York is 5-2-3 in their last ten matches against the Blue Jays.
Hopkins is now 4-2-1 overall while the Spartans fall to 2-3-1.
The first half was scoreless as the Blue Jays outshot the Spartans 7-2 in the first half but York goalie Charlie Johnson (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) kept the Green and White in the game with six first half saves. The Spartans' best first half chance came in the 39th minute when Ryan Donahue (York, Pa./York Suburban) hit a nice cross in the box that found the head of Joel Teston (Manassas, Va./Forest Park). Teston's header just went wide as the game headed to the half scoreless.
The Blue Jays got the game's only goal in the 50th minute as Andrew Park beat a pair of Spartan defenders in the box and slotted a shot inside the right post just beyond the outstretched arms of Johnson to give the hosts the only goal they would need. The Blue Jay goal was the first they have scored against York since September 8, 2010.
The Blue Jays almost made the game 2-0 just a minute later but Johnson made a brilliant save on a Victor Osio shot to keep the Hopkins lead at one.
The Spartans had their best chance of the game in the last 30 seconds of the match as Peter Lundgaard (Greenville, Del./Salesianum) struck a strong shot that keeper Bryan See got a hand on to deflect into the box. Spartan senior Brendan Saberton (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) was streaking into the box and his header squarely hit the cross bar as the ball bounded back into play where See scrambled to secure the ball, essentially ending the game.
Johnson was brilliant in goal for York. The junior notched a career-high 11 saves as he suffered the hard-luck loss. See earned the win with three saves in his fourth shutout of the year.
The Blue Jays ended the game with a 15-12 edge in total shots and a 12-3 margin in shots on goal. The Green and White had a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks while the teams combined for 20 fouls.
The Spartans return home for the first time since September 6 when they host Misericordia on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference match. The contest is slated for a 3:00 pm kickoff.
