Spartan Men’s Soccer Season Concludes in OT Heartbreak

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The third-seed York men's soccer team saw their season come to an end with an overtime loss on a penalty kick at second-seed Stevenson in a Commonwealth Semifinal tilt on Wednesday night.

Ellis Amo lifted the Mustangs to victory and ended York's season when he converted a penalty in the 98th minute. Stevenson advances to face top-seed Messiah on Saturday with the Commonwealth title on the line.

How It Happened
Gianfranco Vitella put the Mustangs on the board first with a tally in the 19th minute of play. Vitella intercepted a pass by Spartan goalkeeper Chase Broughman inside the box and managed to quickly maneuver around Broughman to get a shot off for the goal.

The Spartans rallied back to tie the game before halftime with a goal by Dylan Marco. York was awarded a free kick in the 37th minute up the right wing where Shaun Apsley swung a low bouncing pass into the box. The ball slipped through traffic, hit the left post and Marco was in the right position to knock it in.

Both teams generated scoring chances in the second half, but neither could find that elusive go-ahead goal. The Mustangs owned a slim 9-8 advantage in total second half shots with a 5-3 edge in shots on goal with Broughman making five stops for York.

A scoreless second half set the table for a dramatic extra time finish. With time expiring in the first overtime period, York defender Greg Proctor was booked for a yellow card after a Stevenson player went down inside the box which led to a Mustang penalty.

Ellis Amo stepped up to the ball for Stevenson and hit a low shot towards the right corner of the goal which managed to slip just past out-stretched hands of Broughman for the golden goal.
