Hutson Reaches 200 Career Goals in Setback at Salisbury

SALISBURY, MD – The tenth-ranked Salisbury University Sea Gulls used a big first half en route to a 19-6 Capital Athletic Conference win over York College in men's lacrosse on Wednesday night in Salisbury, Maryland.

The Sea Gulls locked up the first seed in the upcoming CAC Tournament as they are now 12-4 overall and 8-0 in the conference. The loss drops the Spartans to 9-7 overall and 5-2 in the league.

The lone highlight for the Spartans came from senior All-American Tyler Hutson (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) as he became the first York College men's lacrosse player to reach 200 career goals with his third goal of the game. Hutson, who is York's all-time leading scorer, now has 278 points on 201 goals and 77 assists after his four point Wednesday night.

The Sea Gulls couldn't have asked for a better start as they put three goals on the board inside of the opening five minutes of the game. Salisbury tacked on another three goals in a span of 2:24 midway through the period to take a 6-0 lead. The Gulls got two more before the end of the quarter to take an 8-0 lead.

The Gulls kept their foot on the gas in the second quarter as they netted nine more goals to push the lead to 17-0 at the break. The Gulls outshot York 28-5 in the first half as the Spartans had no answer for the top team in the conference.

Salisbury increased the lead to 19-0 before Ryan Cook (Lincoln University, Pa./Avon Grove) got York on the board with a man-up goal with 2:41 left in the third quarter. Hutson scored a pair of goals in the final 42 seconds of the quarter as the lead was 19-3 after three.

York scored three goals in the final quarter to provide for the final score. Hutson netted two of those tallies including his 200th with 8:15 left in the game.

Carson Kalama had a huge night for the Gulls as he had six goals on just six shots while he also had four ground balls in the win. Thomas Cirillo added four goals while James Burton chipped in a pair of goals and an assist for three points. Mike Kane dished out three assists in addition to netting a goal for four points. Five other Sea Gulls added a goal in the win.

Cameron Maples was 12-for-17 at the X for Salisbury while Brooks Eibner was 6-for-12.

Hutson finished the night with four goals on seven shots with two ground balls and a caused turnover. Cook and Andrew Gamble (Easton, Md./Easton) each added a goal and an assist for the Spartans.

Junior Josh Kluver (Abington, Pa./Abington) had four caused turnovers and three ground balls in a solid effort in the defensive third for York. Jake Katchmark (Centreville, Va./Westfield) went 11-for-24 at the X for the Green and White.

The Sea Gulls had five players see time in net as Connor Anderson played the first half and picked up the win. Anderson made two saves and did not allow his goal in 30 minutes of play.

Caleb Abney (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) played the first 16:08 in goal for York as he allowed eight goals against while he recorded one save.

The Sea Gulls ended the game outshooting York 37-22 while the Gulls also held a 38-24 advantage in ground balls. The Spartans committed 21 turnovers while Salisbury had 18 miscues in the win.

The Spartans return to Kinsley Field on Saturday to close out their 2015 regular season with a CAC contest against Christopher Newport. Game time is set for 3:00 pm.
