Spartans' Big First Half Lifts York to CAC Win at SVU

BUENA VISTA, VA – The York College men's lacrosse team took out the frustrations of their Friday night loss to #8 Stevenson with a 17-2 win over Southern Virginia on Saturday afternoon in Buena Vista, Virginia.

The Spartans improve to 9-6 overall and 5-1 in the Capital Athletic Conference. The Knights fall to 1-13 overall and 0-7 in the league.

York got off to a fast start with a pair of goals from senior All-American Tyler Hutson (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) in the opening 2:34 of the game. Andrew Gamble (Easton, Md./Easton) pushed the lead to 3-0 with a goal at the 8:39 mark. Freshman Dillon Hannah (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) closed out the Spartans' first quarter scoring with an unassisted tally with 4:54 remaining in the quarter.

The Knights got on the board in the final minute of the first but the Spartans would put the game away in the second quarter. York scored six straight goals to take a 10-1 lead with 4:10 left in the half. Sophomore Jathan Mahaffey (Millersville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) had three goals during the spurt for the Spartans. Gamble, Hutson, and Garrett Widlake (Catonsville, Md./Mount St. Joseph) also scored during the run.

The Knights got a man-up goal to halt the Spartan run but Alex Millard (Barto, Pa./Boyertown) found the back of the net with 54 seconds left in the half, giving York an 11-2 bulge at the intermission.

The Spartans controlled the remainder of the game as York scored five goals in the third and one more in the fourth to put the game away.

Mahaffey led the Spartans with six points on three goals and three assists as he scored on just four total shots. Hutson added three goals and one assist while Gamble and Jamie Lilly (Davidsonville, Md./St. Mary's Annapolis) each added two goals and an assist for three points. Freshman Tyler Shams (Columbia, Md./Atholton) notched his first two career goals for the Spartans.

Sophomore Jake Katchmark (Centerville, Va./Westfield) dominated at the X as he won 19-of-23 while he also scooped up a game-high 10 ground balls.

Casey Rich and Anthony Good registered the goals for the Knights. Colin Maxfield led the Knights with six ground balls.

Caleb Abney (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) earned the win as he played 29:30 as he allowed one goal while he registered two saves. James Anderson (Pasadena, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) played 15:30 and made two saves while he allowed one goal. Landry Marshall (Brookeville, Md./Glenelg) played the final 15 minutes of the game as he made one save in the win.

Shawn Tikala suffered the loss for the Knights as he made 16 saves in his 60 minutes of action. He allowed all 17 Spartan goals on the day.

The Spartans finished the game with a 51-16 margin in total shots while York also had a 35-20 margin in ground balls. The Knights committed 29 turnovers to 19 for the Green and White.

The Spartans complete their three game road trip on Wednesday with a trip to Salisbury University to take on the nationally ranked Gulls in a key conference contest. Game time is set for 7:00 pm in Salisbury, Maryland.
