Big Second Quarter Leads #8 Stevenson to Big Win over York

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, MD – The eighth-ranked Stevenson University Mustangs used a six goal spurt in the second quarter to pull away and eventually defeat the York College men's lacrosse team 16-6 in non-conference action on Friday night in Owings Mills, Maryland.

The game was originally scheduled to be played on February 14 but bitter cold temperatures prevented the game from being played on that night.

Stevenson improves to 8-4 overall while the Spartans suffered their most lopsided loss of the season as they fall to 8-6.

Stevenson sprinted out to a 4-0 lead in the first 15 minutes of the game as Matt Tompkins scored a pair of goals for the Mustangs.

York's Andrew Gamble (Easton, Md./Easton) got the Spartans on the board off a fast break feed from Tyler Hutson (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) just 23 seconds into the second quarter. It would be all Mustangs the rest of the second as Tompkins tallied two more goals during a six goal spurt to close out the period as Stevenson took a 10-1 lead to the intermission.

The Mustangs pushed the lead to 12-1 before Hutson snapped the 8-0 run with his 33rd goal of the year with 4:40 remaining in the third. The teams traded goals to end the third quarter as the Mustangs led 14-3 after three.

York outscored Stevenson 3-2 in the fourth period but the game had long since been decided as the Mustangs picked up the decisive win.

Tompkins led the Mustangs as he tallied six points on five goals and an assist. Pat Candon contributed six points on two goals and four assists. Stephen Banick chipped in with three goals and an assist for four points. Colin Dabney added two goals as the Stevenson starters were responsible for 13 of the Mustangs' 16 goals.

Freshman Dillon Hannah (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville), Gamble and Hutson all had three points to lead the York offense. Hannah had three goals while Gamble had a goal and an assist. Hutson notched one goal and two assists.

Connor Skeen earned the win in net for the Mustangs as he recorded seven saves in his 59:09 of the game. Kevin Cain played the final 51 seconds in net for Stevenson and was not forced to make a save.

Caleb Abney (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) made 11 saves but allowed 13 goals in his 58:09 of work as he suffered the loss.

The Mustangs outshot York 40-32 while they also held a 39-36 margin in ground balls. Stevenson won 15 face offs while the Green and White won 11. Both teams were sloppy with the ball as York had 28 turnovers while Stevenson committed 24.

The Spartans have a very short turnaround as they will travel to Buena Vista, Virginia tonight and will square off against Southern Virginia on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm in a Capital Athletic Conference contest. The game against SVU means the Spartans will play two games in the span of 20 hours.
