Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The York College men's lacrosse team picked up an important Capital Athletic Conference road victory over the University of Mary Washington by a score of 9-6 on Saturday afternoon.
The first quarter consisted of a back-and-forth battle with Mary Washington (4-4, 1-2 CAC) exiting the first 15 minutes with a 3-2 lead. Freshman Dillon Hannah (Catonsville, Md. / Catonsville) tallied both goals for York (6-4, 2-0), including a goal on the man-advantage. Hannah finished the game with three goals and now has four games on the year with three or more goals.
The Spartans tied the game, 3-3, midway through the second quarter on a goal by freshman Matt Whitcher (Huntington Station, N.Y. / Huntington), but the Eagles responded with two goals to take a 5-3 lead into the locker room.
The CAC's fourth-leading goal scorer, Jack Bondurant, opened the second-half scoring with a goal early in the third quarter, but York answered back with two goals late in the third quarter courtesy of Andrew Gamble (Easton, Md. / Easton) and Whitcher and pulled within one goal of the Eagles.
The Spartans were opportunistic in the fourth quarter, scoring their first two goals of the quarter off UMW turnovers to take a 7-6 lead and then added a third off a faceoff win by Jake Katchmark (Centreville Va. / Westfield).
Whitcher tallied the game-winner for York, giving him three on the day for his first career hat trick. Freshman Ryan Cook (Lincoln University, Pa. / Avon Grove) scored the third goal of fourth quarter as he now has points in consecutive games.
York's ninth and final goal of the game, which came with 38 seconds remaining, marked a historic moment for York College men's lacrosse as its all-time leading scorer Tyler Hutson (Westminster, Md. / Winters Mill) tallied the goal to give him 250 career points. Hutson is the only Spartan in program history to record 200-plus points and his 187 goals also ranks him first all-time in program history.
The Spartans hit the road again for their next game as they travel to St. Mary's (Md.) for a CAC contest starting at 4:00 p.m.
