Box Score YORK, PA – The York College men's lacrosse squad rode the broad shoulders of senior All-American Tyler Hutson (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) to a 14-7 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Marymount University on Wednesday in York.
Hutson had a career day as the senior poured in nine points on a career-high tying seven goals and two assists. Hutson maximized his offensive opportunities in the game as he took just nine shots in the win.
The Spartans nudge above .500, as they are now 5-4 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The Saints fall to 3-6 overall and 0-3 in the league.
The game started off at a ridiculous offensive pace as the first three shots of the game all found the back of the net. Hutson began the scoring off a beautiful feed from Dillon Hannah (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) just 1:05 into the game.
The Saints got a pair of goals from Nathan Beard to take a 2-1 lead with 12:04 left in the first. York answered the Saints tallies with a five-goal spurt that gave the Green and White a 6-2 lead. Andrew Gamble (Easton, Md./Easton) kick started the spurt with a man-down goal with 3:33 left in the first. Hutson capped the first quarter scoring with a goal at the 1:25 mark.
The Spartans took advantage of a Saints' crosschecking non-releasable penalty to score a pair of goals in the first 55 seconds of the second quarter. Matt Horn (Glen Burnie, Md./Old Mill) scored off at Hutson pass 25 seconds into the penalty. Hutson notched his third goal of the day 30 seconds later. Hannah capped the run with his first goal of the day at the 13:04 mark.
Matt Justice slowed the Spartan momentum with a man-down goal with 11:46 remaining in the half, trimming the Marymount deficit to 6-3. The Spartans responded with another Hannah goal at 4:36 followed by a Hutson man-up goal with just 42 seconds left in the half as York took an 8-3 lead to the break.
Hutson opened the second half scoring before the Saints recorded the next two goals to cut the Spartan to 9-5 at the end of the third period.
The teams traded goals to open the fourth period trading goals before the Spartans put the game away with a four goal spurt including a pair of Hutson goals as they pushed out to a 14-6 lead. Nico Burns concluded the scoring with a Marymount goal with 51 seconds left providing for the Spartans' final margin of victory.
In addition to Hutson's career best outing; Hannah registered four points on three goals and an assist. Gamble contributed three assists and a goal for four points while Billy Busche (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) and Ryan Cook (Lincoln University, Pa./Avon Grove) each notched a pair of assists. Alex Millard (Barto, Pa./Boyertown), Mac Godlewski (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's Annapolis), and Horn each found the back of the net once for York.
Junior All-American defender Josh Kluver (Abington, Pa./Abington) notched a pair of caused turnovers and three ground balls while sophomore Sam Lundin (Newark, Del./Delaware Military Academy) added two caused turnovers and a ground ball. Junior Conrad Ordakowski (Baltimore, Md./Mount St. Joseph) led the Spartans with five ground balls as he continues to play well in the York midfield. Sophomore Jake Katchmark (Centreville, Va./Westfield) was 11-for-23 at the X while he also had three ground balls.
Beard and Justice led the Saints with two goals each while Beard also had an assist in the game. Kellan McCarthy and Garrett Nealon each contributed a goal and an assist for Marymount. Chris Madison scooped up five ground balls to pace the Saints.
Andrew Fournier won 10-of-19 at the X while he also had a trio of ground balls.
Caleb Abney (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) earned his fifth win of the season in goal as he made seven saves in his 57:52 of action as he allowed six of the Saints' seven goals.
Mike Kempel was the first of the Saints' three goalies and he allowed eight goals with just one save in his 30 minutes of work. Kevin Genna played the next 28:29 as he allowed six Spartan goals while he made five saves. Colin Durin played the final 1:31 of the game and made one save.
The Spartans finished the game with a 38-25 margin in total shots while both teams had 27 ground balls. York did a fantastic job of taking care of the ball as they committed just nine turnovers, their second lowest total of the season for York.
York was outstanding in the man-up as they notched a season-high four man-advantage goals. The Spartans also recorded their first man-down goal of the year.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday when they travel to Mary Washington for an always-entertaining contest. The Spartans and Eagles kick off the action in Fredericksburg, Virginia at 1:00 pm.
