Big First Half Lifts Elizabethtown over York on Wednesday

Box Score

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA – The York College men's lacrosse team continued their early season struggles as the Green and White dropped an 11-7 decision to Elizabethtown College on a cold and windy Wednesday afternoon in Elizabethtown, PA.

The Blue Jays continue their strong play in 2015 as they improve to 6-2. The Spartans fall to 3-4, as they are 1-4 in their last five games after their 2-0 start.

York got off to a fast start as Dan Kaplan (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) recorded a man-up goal just 31 seconds into the game, giving York the early lead. The Blue Jays got a goal less than a minute later to tie the game at one.

York's Andrew Gamble (Easton, Md./Easton) put York back on top 33 seconds later with his ninth goal of the year as York led 2-1 a mere 1:58 into the game.

The Blue Jays' Russ LeClair then took over as he tallied three straight goals to close out the first quarter as Elizabethtown led 4-2 at the end of the first.

Elizabethtown then put the game away in the second quarter as they scored all four goals of the period to take an 8-2 lead to the half. LeClair scored the final two goals of the half as he had five tallies in the first half.

Elizabethtown pushed the lead to 9-2 early in the third quarter before York ripped off three straight goals to cut their deficit to 9-5. That would be as close as the Spartans would get as the teams traded fourth period goals to provide for the final four-goal margin.

LeClair led all scorers with five goals and an assist for six points. Mike Specht added three goals and an assist while Cody Larkin had a pair of helpers for the Blue Jays. Defender Mike Tangredi had a team-high three caused turnovers while he also had a trio of ground balls.

Tyler Hutson (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) led York with four points on a pair of goals and two assists. Gamble notched a team-high three goals while Kaplan and Dillon Hannah (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) each had a goal for York.

Sophomore face off specialist Jake Katchmark (Centreville, Va./Westfield) was 13-for-20 at the X while he also had a team-high six ground balls.

Chris Wenger went the distance in goal for the Blue Jays as he made 10 saves in his 60 minutes in net.

Caleb Abney (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) started and played 17:50 of the game as he allowed six goals and made just one save. James Anderson (Pasadena, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) played 42:10 and allowed five goals while he made eight saves for York.

Elizabethtown outshot the Spartans 30-27 while York won the ground ball battle 41-32. The Spartans again struggled with turnovers as they committed 21 miscues. It is the fourth time this year that the Spartans have committed 20 or more turnovers in a game. Last year, the Spartans had just two such games as they averaged 14.6 turnovers per game in 2014. York is averaging over 18 turnovers per game in 2015.

The Spartans return home Saturday after having three straight on the road. York hosts Eastern University in a 1:00 pm contest at Kinsley Field.
