Quick Start Powers Spartans Past Haverford

YORK, PA – The York College men's lacrosse team raced out to a 5-0 lead and never looked back en route to their 15-4 win over Haverford College on Saturday afternoon in Haverford, Pa.

The Spartans improve to 3-3 as they snap a three-game losing skid. The Fords are now 3-3 after the loss.

The Green and White got off to a good start as Dan Kaplan (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and Tyler Hutson (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) put York up 2-0 just over four minutes into the game.

Freshman Matt Whitcher (Huntington Station, N.Y./Huntington) made it 3-0 with his fourth goal of the year off a feed from Kaplan. Junior Alex Millard (Barto, Pa./Boyertown) closed out the first period scoring with his second goal of the year just 36 seconds after Whitcher's tally.

York made it 5-0 on an Andrew Gamble (Easton, Md./Easton) goal with 11:54 remaining in the second. Haverford slowed the Spartan run with an Isaac Krier goal with 7:24 left in the half.

Spartan freshman Dillon Hannah (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) struck for a pair of goals in the final 2:28 of the second quarter as he scored a pair of unassisted goals to put York up 7-1 at the break.

Haverford got the opening goal of the second half but York ripped off seven goals in the period, pushing out to a 14-2 lead.

The Fords outscored York 2-1 in the fourth as the Spartans earned the 11-goal win. The 11-goal margin was York's biggest win since last year's 27-2 romp over Southern Virginia on April 4.

Hannah had a career day as the freshman had seven points on four goals and three assists. He put all seven shots on frame in the win while he also had a pair of ground balls. Gamble and Hutson each added four points on a pair of goals and two assists each. Kaplan chipped in with three points on two goals and an assist. Millard picked up a pair of goals in the win.

Josh Kluver (Abington, Pa./Abington) was again dominant on defense as he had four caused turnovers to go along with a pair of ground balls. Freshman defender Joey Fiorino (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) added four ground balls and a caused turnover for the Green and White. Sophomore Jake Katchmark (Centreville, Va./Westfield) was fantastic at the X as he went 17-for-23 in face offs. Katchmark also had a game-high 11 ground balls. Sophomore Conrad Ordakowski (Baltimore, Md./Mount St. Joseph) did a little bit of everything as he had a goal, six ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers in the victory.

Patrick Girard led Haverford with a goal and an assist for two points. Chase Williams, Krier, and Paul Hackett also scored goals for Haverford.

Caleb Abney (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) earned the win in goal as he played the first 52:45 of the game as he made six saves in allowing three goals. Freshman Landry Marshall (Brookeville, Md./Glenelg) made his collegiate debut as he notched three saves and allowed one goal in his 7:15 of action.

Eric Caliendo suffered the loss in net for Haverford as he allowed all 15 Spartan goals while he made eight saves in 60 minutes of action.

York finished the game outshooting their hosts 33-19 while they also held a 40-25 margin in ground balls. The Spartans won 17-of-23 face offs while both teams committed 17 turnovers.

The Spartans return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Elizabethtown College to face the Blue Jays in a non-conference contest. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 pm in Elizabethtown.
