Gettysburg Stays Hot and Down Spartans, 12-6

GETTYSBURG, PA – The York College men's lacrosse team ran into a red-hot Gettysburg Bullet squad on a beautiful Wednesday in Gettysburg. Unfortunately for York, Gettysburg remained hot as they downed the Spartans 12-6 in non-conference action.

The Bullets, who are ranked eighth in the nation, improve to 5-0 overall. The Spartans fall to 2-3 as they have dropped three straight.

The Spartans opened the scoring less than four minutes into the game when Tyler Hutson (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) smoked a shot into the back of the net for the opening salvo.

The Bullets tied the game with a Jameson Smith goal with 4:10 remaining in the opening quarter. Gettysburg then ripped off four goals in the final 1:49 of the first to blow the game wide open. Robby Maddux began the onslaught with a man-up goal at the 1:49 mark. The Bullets got an own goal a minute later followed by goals from Sean Fumai and Jack Harvazinski.

The Bullets kept rolling with the first two goals of the second quarter to take a 7-1 lead with just under four minutes left in the half. The Spartans halted the seven run Bullet spurt as Matt Horn (Glen Burnie, Md./Old Mill) recorded his first career Spartan goal with a tally off a Hutson pass with 3:04 left in the half.

The Bullets kept rolling to open the half as they notched a man-up goal from Smith 2:44 into the stanza. Maddux added his third goal of the game to push the lead to 9-2.

Hutson slowed the Gettysburg momentum with a goal at the 8:43 mark of the third quarter. Maddux recorded his fourth goal of the game followed by a Brendan Morris tally to push the lead to 11-3. York got three straight goals to cut the Gettysburg lead to 11-6 but the Maddux finished off the scoring with a goal with 4:02 left in the game to close out the win.

Maddux finished the game with seven goals with five goals and two assists in the win. He also had four ground balls and a caused turnover for the hosts. Smith added three goals while Fumai added five points on a goal and four assists. Brendan Morris and Chris Pallandino led Gettysburg with five ground balls each. Connor Sweeney recorded nine face off wins in 18 attempts for the Bullets.

Tim Brady recorded five saves in his 60 minutes in goal to earn the win in net for the Bullets. He is now 5-0.

Hutson led the Spartans with three goals and an assist for four points. Freshman Dillon Hannah (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) dished out three assists for three points while he also had a pair of caused turnovers. Ryan Cook (Lincoln University, Pa./Avon Grove), Alex Millard (Barto, Pa./Boyertown), and Horn added goals for the Spartans.

Jake Katchmark (Centreville, Va./Westfield) went 10-for-21 at the X for the Spartans. He also had four ground balls for York.

Caleb Abney (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) suffered the loss as he allowed 10 goals in his 57:11 of work in net. He recorded 12 saves for the Green and White. Man down goalie James Anderson (Pasadena, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) allowed a pair of goals with a save in his 2:49 of work.

The Bullets outshot the Spartans 39-23 while they also held a 32-26 edge in ground balls. The Spartans committed 20 turnovers in the loss while Gettysburg had 14 miscues.

The Spartans will look to get back into the win column on Saturday when they travel to Haverford to face the Fords in a non-conference contest. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
