Saberton Powers Spartans to Road Win at Marymount

Box Score

ARLINGTON, VA – The York College men's soccer team picked up an important 2-1 Capital Athletic Conference road victory at Marymount University on Saturday afternoon in Arlington, Virginia.

The Spartans, winners of four straight and unbeaten in their last six matches, improve to 7-6-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the conference. The Saints fall to 5-8-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the league with the loss.

The story of the match was the performance of senior Brendan Saberton (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum). Saberton opened the scoring just 54 seconds into the contest. Junior Nigel Robinson (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) played a through ball to Saberton on the right side of the box. Saberton drilled a shot low and to the left for the quick strike goal.

The senior sniper struck again a mere 1:24 later as brother Christopher Saberton (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) hit a beautiful cross to the foot of Joel Teston (Manassas, Va./Forest Park). Teston made the extra touch to Brendan Saberton who finished off the chance into the left side of the net for the 2-0 York lead just 2:18 into the game. The goal was Saberton's fifth of the year, tying him for the team lead with Robinson.

Saberton's second goal also moved him into a tenth place tie on the all-time goal scoring list with Kemal Nuspahic with 23 career goals. Saberton is one goal out of ninth place, two goals out of eighth and five out of a sixth place tie.

The Spartans would get a pair of scoring chances during the remainder of the first half but Saint keeper Logan Cropper notched a pair of saves to keep the Marymount deficit at two.

York continued to push the tempo of the match as they had the better of the play in the second 45 minutes of the match. York had a few quality chances but Cropper made three second half saves to keep the Saints in the game.

Marymount spoiled the Spartan shutout with a goal off a restart in the 84th minute. Andre Ferguson took a free kick to the right of the box. He sailed a pass to the back post where Rodney Ngoh headed the ball home, cutting the York lead to 2-1.

The York defense stiffened the rest of the way as they prevented Marymount from getting a potentially tying shot off the final 6:32 of the match.

Junior Charlie Johnson (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) earned the win as he made three saves in his 90 minutes of work. Cropper took the loss as he allowed the two Saberton goals while he made 90 minutes of work.

York outshot the Saints 15-8 including 7-4 in shots on goal. The Spartans had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks while the game featured a combined 41 fouls and two yellow cards.

The Spartans return to action on Tuesday evening when they travel to Wesley College to face the Wolverines in a tough CAC road contest. The Wolverines have won four straight and sit atop the conference standings with 15 points. York is tied for second with 13 points. The match is slated for a 7:00 pm start in Dover, Delaware.
