Box Score YORK, Pa. – The York College men's soccer team picked up its third straight Capital Athletic Conference victory and remain unbeaten in its last five games with a 1-0 win over Frostburg State on Tuesday evening at Graham Field.
The Spartans (6-6-2, 3-1-1 CAC) nearly broke the game wide open in the first half as they were turned away twice from point-blank range by Bobcat goalkeeper Hassan Mostafa. York's first quality chance occurred in the 11th minute when Brendan Saberton (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) rifled a shot on net from approximately eight yards out, but was denied by a diving Mostafa. York had another prime scoring opportunity in the 43rd minute when precise passing around the net led to a shot by Matt Freibaum (New Market, Md. / Linganore) from approximately seven yards out that required another superb save by Frostburg's Mostafa.
Spartan goalkeeper Charlie Johnson (Harrisburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin) matched his net-minding counterpart as he also came up with two critical saves in the first half as the Bobcats peppered him with eight first half shots. Johnson had to lay out to his right on a follow-up chance in the 20th minute following a loose ball on a Bobcat free kick. Again in the 27th minute, Johnson had to fully extend to his right as he snared a low bullet from approximately 20 yards out.
After racking up 11 total shots, the Spartans efforts finally paid off in the 64th minute. Sophomore defender Ryan Ockford (Langhorne, Pa. / Holy Ghost Prep) sent a pass from behind the midfield line to well inside the 18-yard line on the right side of the box. From there, Greg Bechard (Newark, Del. / St. Mark's) rushed in to make a play on the ball as Mostafa came out from in front of the goal in attempt to corral the ball. However, Mostafa mis-handled the ball and Bechard took possession and then ripped a shot to the left corner for the game-winner.
The Spartans had a scare late in the contest when a diving header by Frostburg's K.J. Davis hit squarely off the crossbar, but ricocheted harmlessly out of play.
York finished with a 16-12 advantage in shots as the Bobcats held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Johnson made two saves in net for the Green and White as he recorded his second consecutive clean sheet of the season, giving him three on the year.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday when the travel to Marymount (Va.) for a CAC matchup at 1:00 p.m.
