Big Second Half Lifts Spartans to Non-Conference Win

DALLAS, PA – The York College men's soccer team found the back of the net three times in the second half as they posted a 3-1 non-conference win at Misericordia on Saturday evening in Dallas, PA.

The Spartans improve to 3-1-3 overall while the Cougars fall to 4-2-2 for 2014.

Misericordia got the only score in the first half as Barry Kabinoff registered an unassisted goal in the game's 31st minute.

Both teams had seven first half shots with three of the Spartans' attempts coming on target.

The Green and White wasted little time in notching the equalizer just 4:12 into the second half as freshman Ryan Ockford (Langhorne, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) recorded his first collegiate goal off an assist from junior Greg Bechard (Newark, Del./St. Mark's).

Freshman Matt Freibaum (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) gave the Spartans the lead for good just over two and a half minutes later as he notched an unassisted tally late in the 53rd minute. The Spartans completed their scoring flurry with Bechard driving home a pass from senior Yawo Baah (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) in the 58th minute.

The Spartans got all three of their goals in an a span of eight minutes and three seconds in the second half.

The Green and White would kill off the remaining 22:45 of the game as they earned a hard-fought non-conference road win.

The Spartans finished the game with a 13-12 edge in total shots and a 6-4 margin in shots on goal. The Cougars held a 2-1 margin in corner kicks in the loss.

Charlie Johnson (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) earned the win as he registered two saves in 77:55 of work. Jack Pebole (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) played the final 12:05 in his first action as a Spartan. He made one save for York.

Barry Fitzgerald went the distance in net for the Cougars as he made three saves and allowed three goals in his 90 minutes of work.

The Spartans continue a tough road trip on Wednesday when they travel to Messiah to square off against the top-ranked Falcons in their annual backyard grudge match. Kick off is scheduled for 7:00 pm in Grantham.
