Second Stanza Effort Lifts Spartans Past Wesley, 3-1

Box Score

YORK, Pa. – A spirited effort was rewarded as the York College men's soccer team claimed a 3-1 victory over Wesley on Wednesday evening at Graham Field.

York (6-6-4, 3-3-2 CAC) once again turned in a pedestrian first half of play only to catch fire and start capitalizing on its best chances in the second stanza.

It only took 18 seconds into the second half for the Spartans to record their first shot and only 47 seconds before they recorded their first goal. Multiple Spartans got in on the act as Yawo Baah (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) serviced the ball in on the corner kick to the head of Ryan Ockford (Langhorne, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) who headed the ball back towards the middle to find Greg Bechard (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) who collected and finished with a hard strike to the back left corner.

The Wolverines (7-7-1, 2-5) answered back almost five minutes later with a goal of their own coming off a free kick that was played deep into the six-yard box then headed over to the right post where Wesley's Shaune Gorman finished for the equalizer.

York responded in the 60th minute with the eventual game-winner after a ball that seemed to be bouncing over the end line was suddenly played back in by Brendan Saberton (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum). Saberton's high-arcing volley was placed beautifully on the backside left post where Ockford leaped into the air and made a solid connection for the game-winning header tally.

The Spartans extended their lead in the 87th minute on a penalty kick by Baah following the 16th foul of the contest by Wesley.

York overwhelmed the Wolverines with a 22-5 shot margin to go along with an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.

The Spartans will have a crucial contest at home on Saturday as they will face No. 15 ranked and current CAC-leading Salisbury. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m.
