York Offense Erupts at Southern Virginia, Freibaum Leads With Four-Point Performance

Box Score

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The York College men's soccer squad unleashed a lot of built up frustration from a season that has not gone the way they had envisioned with a decisive 7-1 win at Southern Virginia on Saturday afternoon.

In a season where offensive production has seemed to be a struggle at times for the Spartans (5-6-4, 2-3-1 CAC), the floodgates final broke open and the York offense hit on all cylinders as seven different Spartans recorded a tally against Southern Virginia (5-12, 1-5).

Leading the offensive effort for York was sophomore Matt Freibaum (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) who turned in a career-best performance with four points on the day.

Freibaum opened the scoring with a tally in the fourth minute and later dished out his first of two assists in the sixth minute.

Christopher Saberton (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) set up Freibaum on the first goal, while Brendan Saberton (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) was the beneficiary of the Freibaum assist for York's second tally.

The first Spartans not named Freibaum or Saberton to record a point were seniors Justin Kaiser (Bradenburg, Ky./Menchville (Va.)) and Yawo Baah (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield). Kaiser notched the tally, while Baah produced the helper.

After Kaiser and Baah had their fun, it was back to Freibaum and Christopher Saberton. This time the roles were reversed as Freibaum assisted Christopher for his first goal of the season.

Baah was not done as he tallied the fifth Spartan goal of the first half after being set up by Ryan Donahue (York, Pa./York Suburban).

At the end of the first half, five different Spartans had scored a goal and six different Spartans had recorded a point.

The second half produced a new group of Spartan point-gatherers.

Peter Lundgaard (Greenville, Del./Salesianum), York's leading goal scorer, tallied his fifth goal of the season with a header in the 89h minute following a cross by Greg Bechard (Newark, Del./St. Mark's).

Bechard was not done dishing out dimes as he crossed another ball into the box in the final minute to find the head of freshman Joel Teston (Manassas, Va./Forest Park) who finished for the game's final tally.

Bechard's two assists set a new single-game career-high and Baah set a career-high in points with three. Christopher Saberton tied his single-game career-high in points with three.

After three straight games on the road, the Spartans return home on Wednesday to face conference rival Wesley at 4:00 p.m.
