Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. – The York College men's soccer team
stretched their current winning streak to four consecutive matches
on Thursday evening, as the Spartans bested host Lynchburg 3-0. The
Green and White, who have not allowed a goal during each of the
past four games, improve to 8-3 on the season while the Hornets
drop to 6-3-1.
Junior midfielder Mike Gill got the
Spartans on the board early as he scored his third goal of the year
just 1:07 into the match. Gill got on the end of a Chris Weaver service
as the captain's header gave the Green and White the early 1-0
advantage.
The Spartans tallied their second score in the 34th
minute. Aaron
Beale, who had substituted in for the Green and White 52
seconds earlier, struck a shot that was initially blocked by the
Hornet defense. The ricochet proved fortuitous for the Spartans
however, as the ball bounded to Justin Facer who
popped home his third goal of the season.
York took a 2-0 lead in the halftime break after outshooting
Lynchburg 12-4.
The second stanza proved a bit tighter, with the Spartans
holding a narrow 8-7 lead in shots. However it would only be the
Green and White that found the back of the net during the latter
45.
In the 67th minute, Cody Pearson served
in a free kick for the Spartans. Andy Stromberg,
one of York's talented center backs, finished off the service with
a header – his second header goal of the 2010 campaign
– to give York the final 3-0 result.
Picking up their fourth clean sheet in as many contests, the
Spartans only allowed 11 shots, five of which came during the final
13 minutes of the match.
Jesse
Derksen garners the victory in the Spartan goal as he made four
saves over his 80:48 of work. Ethan Kavanagh
played the final 9:12 for York, making a pair of stops. Michael
Releford suffers the loss in the Lynchburg goal as he recorded four
saves.
The Green and White return to action on Saturday, October 2
– during the College's annual "Fall Fest" weekend –
when they welcome their newest Capital Athletic Conference foe
Frostburg State to Graham Field. The conference tilt is slated for
a 2:00 pm start.
