Box Score HOBOKEN, N.J. – For the second straight
contest, the #23 York College men's soccer team came out on the
short end of the final result as they fell 1-0 to host #12 Stevens
Friday evening in Hoboken, N.J. The defeat drops the Spartans to a
4-3 mark while the Ducks remain unbeaten and improve 5-0-1.
Senior midfielder Nolan Sandberg provided the heroics for the
Stevens side in the 63rd minute. Sandberg buried a
deflected pass from Curtis Stecyk from ten yards out to give the
Ducks the 1-0 advantage and the eventual game-winner.
Before Sandberg's tally however, the Spartans had plenty of
chances of their own. The first 45 minutes would see the Spartans
post their most opportunities as York outshot Stevens 9-4 in the
frame. Of the Green and White's nine shots in the half, four that
required saves from starting Duck goalkeeper Zach Carr.
Stevens also nearly tallied a first stanza score as Sandberg
clanged a shot off the post at the 10:24 mark. Proving to be a
significant offensive threat, Sandberg notched three of the Ducks
four opening half shots.
After the 0-0 first 45, Sandberg found paydirt on his fourth
attempt as tallied 17:37 into the second half. After his score,
Stevens surged for an insurance goal as the Ducks rattled off the
game's next four shots and six of the next seven tries. Fortunately
for the visitors, none would find the back of the net allowing York
time to notch the equalizer.
Despite the opportunity, the Spartans had trouble creating
dangerous chances in the final minutes. The Green and White could
only post three shots over the final 27 minutes, although all three
– one from Mike Gill and two from
Kemal
Nuspahic – were on target.
For the game, the squads tied 13-13 in shots – York led
9-4 in the first half before the Ducks outshot their visitors 9-4
in the second. Stevens did grab a 6-4 lead in corners as the
Spartans were not able to generate any in the second stanza.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jesse Derksen
suffers the defeat as he made four saves on the evening. Derksen's
solid play, including a diving save in the 78th minute
on a Zach Bowman attempt that was heading for the upper right
corner, kept the Spartans in the match throughout. Carr picks up
the win as he made seven saves for the Ducks.
The Spartans, who lost to Kean 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon, drop
back-to-back matches the first time since the 2005 campaign. On
September 14, 2005, the Green and White lost 2-1 to Messiah in
double overtime before falling in their next contest to Salisbury
1-0 on September 17.
York will now look to get back into the win column as they
return home to Graham Field. The Spartans host North Carolina
Wesleyan on Sunday, September 19 in a 2:00 pm non-conference tilt.
The Battling Bishops invade Graham Field sporting a 6-1 record with
their only loss coming to Stevens as they fell 2-0 to the Ducks
last Saturday.
