DOVER, DEL – The York College softball team snapped their
four game losing streak with a Capital Athletic Conference sweep of
Wesley College in Dover, Delaware on Wednesday. The Spartans won
game one 10-2 and completed the sweep with a 19-6 win in the
nightcap.
The Spartans improve to 26-6 overall and 7-3 in the Capital
Athletic Conference while the Wolverines fall to 4-26 overall and
0-10 in the league.
Game one saw the Spartans jump on Wesley with a three run second
inning as York banged out four hits in the frame. York added two
runs in the top of the fourth before the Wolverines struck for a
pair of runs on three hits with one Spartan error in the bottom of
the inning.
York closed out the scoring with two runs in the top of the
seventh to pick up the 10-2 victory. Sophomore
Brittany Therres (Hughesville, Md./Thomas Stone)
notched her school-record 20th win of the season as she
allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits with four strikeouts and
a walk.
Jenn Post suffered the loss as she allowed seven runs, five
earned, one 12 hits with three walks. She falls to 0-7 with the
loss.
Heather Bormann (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial)
led the Spartan offense as she was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Senior
Julie Norris (Frederick, Md./Frederick) was also
stellar as she was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and two RBI.
Megan Van Meter (Hanover, Md./Archbishop Spalding)
collected a pair of knocks for the Green and White.
Keeyana Talley had the Wolverines lone extra base hit with her
fourth inning double.
In the nightcap, York exploded out of the gate with a four run
top of the first. Kristen Gray (Mickelton, N.J./Kingsway
Regional) had a two run double in the inning while
Hannah Hugel (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) also had an
RBI in the frame.
The Wolverines cut the Spartan lead in half with two runs in the
second inning. York responded with a Sarah Harris
(Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) RBI double to left as the
Spartans led 5-2.
York pushed the lead to 9-2 in the top of the fourth but Wesley
cut into the lead again with two runs, sending the game to the
fifth. The Spartans put up 10 runs in the top of the frame to take
any doubt about the outcome of the game.
Hugel paced the Spartan offense as she was 4-for-4 with three
RBI and two runs scored. Senior Sam Lawrence (Bethlehem,
Pa./Liberty), Gray and Van Meter each added three hits to
the attack. Lawrence also stole five bases, scored three runs and
had two RBI. Gray drove in three and scored three others while Van
Meter plated three runs and scored two others. Kelly Smith
(Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) chipped in with two
hits, three RBI and three runs scored.
Nikki Barton led the Wolverines as she was 3-for-3 with two runs
scored. Taylor Hendricks had a hit and two RBI for the
Wolverines.
Freshman Corrine Majczan (Center Valley, Pa./Southern
Lehigh) earned the win as she went four innings, allowing
four runs on five hits with four strikeouts and a walk. She is now
6-3 for the season.
Taylor Hendricks took the loss as she allowed 11 runs, nine
earned, on 15 hits with one walk in four innings of work. She falls
to 3-7 with the loss.
The Spartans close out their CAC regular season on Friday
afternoon when they host Gallaudet University in a conference
twinbill. Game one is slated for a 3:00 pm start at Spartan
Stadium.
