SALISBURY, MD – The York College men's lacrosse team ran
into a buzz saw Tuesday evening as they fell to #1 Salisbury 19-4
in Salisbury. With the loss, the Spartans fall to an even 7-7,
including a 4-2 mark in the Capital Athletic Conference. The Sea
Gulls stay flawless as they improve to 15-0 and 6-0 in league play.
The visiting Spartans began the game on a high note as they took
the contest's first lead. Senior Zach Scherr (Reisterstown,
Md./Franklin) won the opening face-off for the Green and
White which allowed Jamie Lowe (Monrovia,
Md./Urbana) to notch the opening salvo just 28 seconds
into the CAC tilt. The rookie's eighth tally of the year gave York
the initial advantage, which the Green and White would hold for
over five minutes, but it proved one they could not sustain.
Five minutes 13 seconds after Lowe's score, the top-ranked Sea
Gulls began a torrid 17-0 run that spanned three quarters. Mike
Winter's goal with 9:19 remaining in the first quarter, his
32nd of the season, sparked the offensive stretch.
Eleven different players for the Salisbury side tallied goals
during the run, which was finished by Jeff McGuire's fifth score of
the year with 49 seconds to go in the third.
Much to their credit, the Spartans continued to battle in the
fourth quarter as they tallied three times in the last frame.
Josh
Gamble (Easton, Md./Easton) and Adam Cooper (Bel Air,
Md./Bel Air) posted back-to-back goals early in the fourth
before Gamble tallied again with 5:49 remaining.
For the game, Salisbury outshot the Spartans 34-25, including
31-16 over the first three quarters. York bested the home squad
with 37 ground balls to the Sea Gulls' 35 while the Spartans also
won a vast majority of the 26 face-offs (17-9).
The talented Salisbury side however, simply proved too much for
the Green and White on this day. Mike Von Kamecke led the Sea Gulls
with four goals while Winter added three scores. Kyle Gallagher won
9-of-18 face-offs as he collected a team-high seven ground balls.
Michael Schwab posted a trio of caused turnovers for the Sea Gulls.
Johnny Rodriguez takes the victory in goal as he made eight saves
over his 39:01 of work. The lead allowed Salisbury to utilize three
back-up netminders as each saw at least two minutes of action.
For the Spartans, Gamble posted a pair of tallies to bring his
season total to 42. Those 42 plus his 20 assists on the season,
give the junior attack a team-leading 62 points in 2010.
Daniel Schuck (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken)
was nothing short of exceptional in face-offs as he went a solid
16-for-23 while snagging a game-high eight ground balls. In just
his freshman season, Schuck, who has taken over a majority of the
face-off duties, has won 90-of-176 at a clip of .511.
Defenseman Travis Atwell (Dunkirk,
Md./Southern) posted three caused turnovers while
James
Greenwood (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) caused a pair of Sea
Gull miscues. Chris Collins (Westminster,
Md./Westminster) suffers the loss in net as he made five
saves over his 45 minutes of work. Michael Karwoski
(Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) and Devin O'Neill
(Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) combined to close out
the final 15 minutes with Karwoski making the lone stop.
The Spartans will now look to quickly right the ship as they
will have little time to sulk. York hits the road once again on
Thursday to face #3 Stevenson in the Spartans' final regular season
contest. Start time is slated for 4:00 p.m.
