YORK, PA - The York College softball team rebounded from
their tough loss to Mary Washington on Saturday with a Sunday
doubleheader sweep of Washington College of Maryland in York. The
Spartans won the opener 8-3 before completing the sweep with a 10-2
win in five innings in the nightcap.
The Spartans, winners of 11 of their last 12 games, improve to
22-2 overall while the Shorewomen fall to 7-9.
Washington jumped on Spartan starter Brittany Therres
(Hughesville, Md./Thomas Stone) for a run in the first as
Margaret Rohde scored Sally Snover with a two-out double to center.
The Spartans responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the
first two answer Washington's opening salvo. Therres tied the
game at one with an RBI ground out while Megan Van Meter
(Hanover, Md./Archbishop Spalding) plated the other run
with a two-out single to left.
The Spartans increased the lead to 3-1 on a Heather
Bormann (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) RBI single in the
third.
The Shorewomen knotted the score at three with a pair of runs in
the top of the fourth. Rohde and Shaelen Nottingham opened the
inning with back-to-back doubles to left center with
Nottingham's two-bagger scoring Rohde. Nottingham then came
around to score on a Becca Nicely RBI single. Therres escaped more
significant damage with a finely turned double play to end the
inning.
The Spartans wasted little time in untying the game in the
bottom of the fourth. The Green and White tallied five runs on five
hits with a Washington error as they turned a tie game into an 8-3
lead.
Freshman Corrine Macjzan (Center Valley, Pa./Southern
Lehigh) was brilliant in relief of Therres as the
right-hander tossed three hitless innings to earn her second save
of the year. She struck out three and walked one in her stint.
Therres earned the win as she allowed three runs on six hits
with two walks in her four innings of work. The win was her
17th of the year.
Offensively, the Spartans were paced by Bormann, as the senior
captain was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Fellow senior
captain Sam Lawrence (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty)
added three hits and a pair of runs scored from her leadoff
position. Smith and freshman Hannah Hugel (Paoli,
Pa./Conestoga) each added a pair of hits. Hugel also had
two runs scored and an RBI while Smith dented the plate once.
Rohde led Washington with two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
Nottingham was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while Nicely
was 1-for-3 with a run batted in.
In game two, York applied pressure to the Shorewomen from the
first inning on. Lawrence began the bottom of the first with a
single, a steal of second, and a steal of third before heading home
on a Bormann RBI ground out.
The Spartans kept rolling in the second as sophomore
Brittany Schlorff (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham)
stroked a two-run triple to right center. A pair of Washington
errors greased the skids for the Spartans' two runs in the
frame.
Washington cut into the Spartan lead with two runs in top of the
third. The damage could have been much worse but Washington left
the bases loaded as they trailed 3-2.
The Green and White, much like they did in game one, put
together a big inning. This time it was a four-run bottom of the
third. The scoring in the inning started with a two-run single to
center by Smith as the Spartan lead grew to 5-2. Senior catcher
Julie Norris (Frederick, Md./Frederick) then had a
beautiful safety squeeze, scoring Smith, on a tremendous hook
slide, with the third run of the frame. Michelle Barwick
(Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) then scored on a wild pitch,
increasing the Spartan lead to 7-2.
York closed out the game with three runs in the bottom of the
fourth. Bormann had a sacrifice fly while Van Meter and Smith each
had RBI singles.
Therres earned the win in relief of Majczan as she threw three
shutout innings. Therres allowed three hits while she struck out
three as she improves to 18-1 for the campaign. Majczan allowed two
runs on two hits with two walks and a strikeout in her two-plus
innings of work.
Brittany Walter took the loss for Washington as she allowed 10
runs, eight earned, on nine hits with three walks and three
strikeouts in her four innings of work. She falls to 3-5 with the
loss.
Smith continued to stay hot at the plate, as she was 2-for-3
with three RBI and a run scored. Schlorff was 2-for-2 with two RBI
and a run scored while Barwick was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Leigh Carbutt led the Shorewomen with two hits while Jordan
Tryhubenko and Rohde each had a hit and an RBI in the game.
The Spartans close out their season-high 12-game home stand on
Tuesday when they host Gallaudet University in a CAC twin bill.
First pitch for game one is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
