York Softball Splits Against DeSales

YORK, Pa. – The Spartan softball team hosted DeSales for a non-conference double header. The Green and White split on the day, coming away with a 14-7 win in game one, before falling in extra innings in game two, 3-2.

How It Happened
York got on the board early with two runs in the bottom of the first, thanks to a two-RBI double from Bri McKeown

The Bulldogs grabbed the lead in the top of the second, plating four. 

In the bottom of the second, Gretchen Barstad knotted the game up again at 4-4. This came just after Allison Hunsberger walked to score a run as well. 

Two more RBI-singles from Alexis McDonaugh and Noelle Smith extended York lead to 7-4. 

The Green and White grabbed their eighth run in a double steal in the third. 

DeSales inched closer in the top of the fourth, before the Spartans exploded for three more in the bottom of the inning. 

Smith doubled to right center, Madison Karpovich singled, and Danella Silagy walked, which each play scoring one of the three Spartan runs. 

In the bottom of the fifth, Smith rocked a solo homer, and Ashlyn Weigle knocked an RBI-single into right field. 

Each team scored a single run in the sixth inning. 

York's run crossed the plate on an error, adding an insurance run, capping off the 14-7 victory. 

Courtney Freese hurled the complete game, allowing seven runs on nine hits and three walks. She struck out a career-high eight batters.

How it Happened
The Bulldogs got their first run of the game on a double steal. 

DeSales scored their second run in the top of the seventh inning on a Spartan error. 

York responded in the bottom of the seventh inning. McDonaugh singled, before Bri McKeown stepped up to the plate. McKeown hit a home run to left field, tying the game and forcing extra innings. 

With the international-tiebreaker rule in effect, DeSales started with a runner on second in the top of the eighth inning. The runner scored on a RBI-single to take a 3-2 lead. 

York started with Karpovich at second. Ashlyn Weigle laid down a sacrifice bunt, putting Karpovich at third with one-out. The Green and White were stopped there, as DeSales captured the 3-2 victory. 

Kyrsten Coppage started in the circle for the Spartans. 

Gretchen Barstad pitched 7.1 innings in relief, allowing two runs (both unearned) on seven hits and a walk. She struck out six batters.
