YORK, PA – The York College men's lacrosse squad
secured a commanding 15-3 Capital Athletic Conference victory
Wednesday, as they topped visiting Hood on a beautiful spring day
in York. The Spartans, who pick up the triumph in the first of
seven straight CAC contests, improve their 2010 season mark to 4-5
and 1-0 in league play while the Blazers fall to 5-4 (0-1 CAC).
Junior attack Josh Gamble (Easton, Md./Easton)
continued his impressive season by notching five goals and two
assists in the Spartan rout. Gamble recorded York's first of
the day, courtesy of a Brendan McLaughlin (Brookeville,
Md./Good Counsel) assist, with 9:28 remaining in the first
quarter. He would tally three more times in the first half, as well
as dish out both of his helpers. For the season, Gamble leads the
Green and White with 27 goals while also posting 13 assists for a
team-best 40 points.
Ryan McNicholas (Fallston, Md./Fallston),
another veteran on the first-line attack, garnered a tremendous
offensive day of his own scoring five times. McNicholas registered
three of the Spartans' first five goals, including a gorgeous
fast-break tally from Jason Underwood (Shady Side,
Md./Southern) with 35 seconds to go in the first quarter.
The senior has now recorded 25 goals on the season, currently
ranking him second on the squad.
York did start out a little slow however, allowing the visitors
jumped out in front early. Hood's Sofiane Lazar put his squad
up 1-0 with 11:41 to play in the opening stanza. The Spartans
seemed a bit sluggish to open the contest, but Lazar's tally
woke up the Green and White on both ends of the field.
The Spartans side went on to tally the next seven goals to take
a commanding 7-1 lead. That advantage would stretch to 10-2 by
halftime as the Green and White never looked back.
For the game, York outshot their guests 38-21 while winning 12
of the 22 face-offs. Impressively, the Spartans went 3-for-3 in
extra-man opportunities while forcing the Blazers to go only
1-for-8.
Zach Scherr (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) was
nothing short of fantastic as the face-off specialist went
12-for-16 against the Blazers. Defensively, James Greenwood
(Bel Air, Md./Fallston) picked up four ground balls while
Dan Sadler (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) collected three
ground balls and caused three turnovers.
Midfielder Adam Cooper (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air)
posted a terrific stat line, recording two goals, two assists, two
caused turnovers, and one ground ball.
Chris Collins (Westminster, Md./Westminster),
Michael Karwoski (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville),
and Devin O'Neill (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop
Shanahan) shared the goalkeeping duties notching a total
of nine saves while only allowing three goals.
York continues their extended slate of CAC games on Wednesday,
March 31, when they travel to Marymount. The Spartans take on the
Saints at Washington & Lee High School in an under-the-lights
tilt beginning at 8:00 p.m.
