KISSIMMEE, FLA – The York College softball squad won two very
different games as they opened their 2010 season with an 11-2 win
over Gwynedd-Mercy and a tight 1-0 victory over RIT in their
nightcap. The Spartans improve to 2-0 while Gwynedd-Mercy is 0-2
and RIT is 2-2. The games are the first of a 12-game stay in
Kissimmee, Florida.
In the opener, York opened the game with a
single run in the first on a Heather Bormann (Brick,
N.J./Brick Memorial) RBI single. York extended the lead to
5-0 with four runs in the second inning. The Spartan advantage grew
to 7-0 courtesy of a Brittany Schlorff (Hatboro,
Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) two-run single in the top of the
third inning.
The Griffins got onto the board in the bottom
of the third with a pair of runs off Spartan reliever
Corrine Majczan (Center Valley, Pa./Southern
Lehigh) but she would settle in and hold Gwynedd-Mercy off
the board the rest of the game.
York closed out the scoring with two runs in
the sixth and two in the seventh to provide for the final 11-2
margin.
Bormann led the Spartans offense as the senior
captain went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Fellow senior
captain Sam Lawrence (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty)
added two hits, two runs scored and an RBI from her leadoff spot in
the York lineup . Schlorff made her first Spartan contest a
memorable one with two hits, three RBI, and a run scored.
Jaclyn Franzen led Gwynedd-Mercy as she was
1-for-4 with two RBI.
Majczan earned the win as she allowed two runs
on three hits with six strikeouts and five walks in her five
innings of action. Sophomore Brittany Therres (Hughesville,
Md./Thomas Stone) started the game and tossed two perfect
innings with two strikeouts as she left the game with a 6-0 lead.
Sydney Norton took the loss as she allowed ten
runs, eight earned, on 12 hits with three strikeouts and two walks
in seven innings. Norton falls to 0-1 with the loss.
The nightcap was dramatically different from
the opener as offense was definitely at a premium.
The Tigers looked like they were going to get
on the board of Therres early as they loaded the bases just three
hitters into the game. Therres got a pop up, a fielder's
choice, and a ground out to extricate herself from the jam.
The Spartans scored the game's lone run
with a two-out uprising in the second. Tiger pitcher Carlissa Cole
got the first two outs of the inning before Kelly Smith
(Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) and Megan
Markland (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) had
back-to-back singles. Junior Michelle Barwick
(Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) then plated Smith with the
tally courtesy of an RBI single. Cole walked Lawrence to load the
bases but she got out of the tough spot with a harmless ground out.
Therres cruised through the next five innings
as she allowed just one base runner and that came via a Spartan
error in the third. The Tigers made life a little tough in the
seventh as they had runners at first and second with two outs but
Therres struck out pinch hitter Arielle Link to end the game. It
was Therres's eighth career complete game shutout.
The sophomore scattered just four hits with
two strikeouts and no walks as she improves to 1-0. For the day,
she did not allow a run and only four hits in nine innings as she
got off to a great start for 2010.
Cole suffered the hard luck loss as she
allowed the one run on six hits with one walk in her six innings of
work.
Smith led the Spartan offense with two hits
and a run scored. Barwick had York's lone RBI while Bormann
went 1-for-3 with a triple in the third inning.
Four different Tigers had a hit in the game
with Shannon McCormick picking up RIT's lone extra base hit
with her double to lead off the game.
The Spartans return to action on Monday
afternoon when they face St. Benedict at 1:00 pm followed by a
second game against Gwynedd-Mercy at 5:00 pm.
