Box Score YORK, Pa. – In front of a large crowd at York
College's "Fall Fest Weekend," the Spartan
men's soccer squad relied on junior Kemal Nuspahic and his
lone goal to carry the Green White to a 1-0 victory over conference
foe Frostburg State. With the triumph, York improves to 9-3 overall
and 3-0 in the CAC. The Bobcats from Frostburg State drop to
3-7-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the conference.
The Green and White had trouble getting the offense going in the
early beginnings due to Frostburg's defensive game-plan. The
Spartans had numerous opportunities, but the stingy Bobcat defense
seemed to always be at the right place at the right time. York
nearly had their first score of the game as Spartan senior Lucas Emil hit a free kick from inside the box that curved over a wall of
defenders and seemed destined for paydirt, but clanged harmlessly
off the left post.
As the second half started, the Spartan offense came out with
determination to break through the scoreless tie and post the
game's first goal. In the 60th minute, they did just that.
Emil hit a streaking Nuspahic with a long lead pass from midfield
to the left side of the box. Nuspahic maneuvered his way just past
his defender and ripped off a shot that found its way to the back
of the net.
The Spartans used Nuspahic's fourth goal of the season as a
momentum builder to carry them the rest of the way for the
victory.
The Green and White defense also utilized that momentum as they
held the Bobcats to two shots on goal the entire game. Frostburg
proved dangerous on several occasions, especially toward the end of
the match, but were unable to put a majority of those attempts on
target.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jesse Derksen claimed two saves for the Green
and White has he picked up the clean sheet victory. The Spartan
defense extends their shut-out streak to five games and has not
allowed a goal in their last 477 minutes of play. For the Bobcats,
Stephen Cavallo played well turning away five Spartan attempts as
his goal was peppered with 17 shots on the afternoon.
York now heads up the road on Tuesday to face non-conference rival
and Division III power Messiah. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 pm
in Grantham, PA.
